Chapter 18: All Too Well

Emmarose’s P.O.V.

The hospital bed felt all too familiar. I knew everything all too well. I could feel the doctors’ presence hovering over my limp body though my eyes were closed. The only difference was that the events before was all too clear. I could remember every single detail from Carla’s choking hold around my neck to Harry’s ragged breaths after he was shot.

After my eyes shut, my eyelids became heavy barriers I could not lift, and my body left into the state between consciousness and unconsciousness where I was aware of my surroundings but unable to respond to it. When Harry was shot, horror and dread overcame me. Even if I didn’t make it, I was hoping he would. I am obviously alive, but is Harry?

The question haunted me and engrossed my thoughts. What if he wasn’t? Everything is all my fault. Why couldn’t I just be a normal girl and say yes to love? Oh, that’s right because I am not a normal girl. Why did I drag Harry into my problems? Why didn’t he run when he could have? Why was Carla so cruel?

Questions swarmed my mind, and unable to deal with the thoughts, my eyes snapped open only to shut them against the sudden bright lights of the hospital.

“Emmarose, you’re awake.” The doctor said whilst picking up a clipboard before telling a nurse to check my vitals. “You were shot in the abdomen and suffered critical wounds. We weren’t expecting you to make it through. It is a miracle you are alive.”

The doctor checked a couple of things off on the clipboard before he looked up at me through his thick framed glasses. “You have been out for over five days.”

“Where’s Harry?” I asked. I didn’t care about how I was doing at the moment. All I cared about was the well being of Harry.

“Your friend is doing just fine. He was shot in the shoulder, but he wasn’t in as bad as a condition as you. He is still in the hospital though.” Upon the sound of those words, I breathed a sigh of relief. “In fact, he has made many visits to you as you can see.” The doctor gestured around the room. Taking a clear look at things, sure enough, Harry had visited me many times in the past five days, for there were flowers all around my room. It was déjà vu.

The doctor left during my moment of bliss, and I requested of the nurse to bring the bouquets of flowers to me.

After she set them all by the bedside table for my access, she asked if I needed anything else.

“Could you read me the cards attached to the flowers, please?” I asked.

“Of course.” The kind nurse replied before reaching for a bouquet of beautiful purple flowers with flimsy petals. “It was love at first sight, signed by Harry, who also wrote at the bottom that this is a gladiolus.”

Reaching for the next one, she continued. “Forget me not, signed Harry.”

The list went on as she read each card, starting with the gladiolus, then leading to the forget-me-nots, yellow zinnia, acacia, yellow tulip, and finally, my favorite, the lilacs.

As she finished the card on the lilacs, a knock on the door resounded, and in came Harry being pushed in a wheelchair. His arm was wrapped in a white bandage and put in a sling around his neck.

“Hi.” He simply said before a heart-stopping smile graced his face. From behind his back, Harry pulled out a bundle of white violets.

“What do these mean?” I delightedly asked as I accepted the bundle of flowers.

“Take a chance of happiness... with me.”
