Chapter 5

We scramble up the rubble to the remainder of the roof. All that's left are the beams which supported the structure of the dome shaped roof. "What do we do now?" I ask good crow. He looked around the city surroundings. "I'm not quite sure". We stood there, the dusty wind blowing in our faces. "I need to get home..." I thought aloud.

"They'd be waiting for you there. It'd only be a risk." he replied shaking his head slightly.

"We have supplies, and a first aid kit. I noticed you limping," I look down at his ankle. "I'm smarter than I look." we stand in silence for a while longer before he turns to me.

"That seems like our only option then" He takes several steps toward the edge of the building and peers down.

"You're not going to jump are you?" I asked in shock, he points to the right, I stand next to him and see a ladder running down the side of the ancient library. "Oh. right."

"Which way?" didn't think of that.

"Uhm, I'm not even sure where we are."

"There's got to be a map of some sorts down in the library." He says after a long pause. We climb back down to the third floor and search through the seemingly endless bookshelves. I finally come across a shelf filled with scrolls and parchment. I pulled out a scroll about the length of my arm and unraveled it. Bingo. "Hey, good crow I found a map!" I shouted across the room. He appeared beside me quickly. "Good job." he praised as he scanned the map. " And don't call me that." He took the map out of my hands and took it to a nearby table. Using his finger he pinpointed where the library was. "So we're here..." He drew imaginary trails through the forest to where he assumed the base was. "We came from around here... where's your house?" I searched the map for the familiar name of my hometown. When I had found it I pinpointed it. "There." We spent another half an hour looking for the easiest route. Once we had both come to an agreement we took the map and set off.

Our plan was to follow the river until we came to the apartment buildings then sneak through the city till we get to the fields. "It's getting dark." I said trying to make light conversation. "Yeah, we might have to camp out and continue on tomorrow." Don't really want to stop. Wanna get home and see your sister. "Yeah, we might have to." As we walked I let my mind wander to a world of infinite possibilities. I thought of the past few days, trying to comprehend what's been going on. The Red Legion are running secret experiments in small rooms underground. But what did they do to me? My eyes, they're not the same. There must be a way to get them back to normal. "We should set up camp there." I was snapped back to reality by good crows muffled voice. I look to where he was directing his attention and saw a small house through the trees, looking slightly run down. Not really surprising. "What if people are already there?" I asked.

"Then we'll ask if we can stay the night, if they don't let us then we'll keep moving."

I nod in agreement. We tramp through the thin underbrush and stand on the old rickety porch. Good crow knocks on the door quietly, waits a moment, then knocks again. I stand off to the side, starting to shiver. He looks at me then pounds the door loudly. We wait for several moments before we agree to assume the house is empty and good crow starts to smash his body weight against the door, trying to push it open. What an idiot. I stop him before he hurts himself and and turn the door knob. The door pulls open with ease. I look at him blankly before stepping inside.
