"Can I Come Out Today?" Kiera pleated. There was no answer. "Damn. The day of my 17th birthday, and I can't even have an enjoyable one." She walked away from the door and peered outside the window of the attic. Ever since Kiera could remember, she has always lived in the attic. When she was younger, some maids lived in the attic with her, but they soon left. They gave her all the necessities she needed to survive on her own with some acomidations. Kiera didn't mind living alone, she had no one to disturb her while doing what ever she pleased. As Kiera looked outside the window, she could see some ladies in the lavender fields afar, picking lavender.
"Wow, I'd love to switch my life with one of them. Even if I had to work everyday." Kiera sighed and spent all morning watching the ladies in the gardens. She loved the hats they were wearing that had wrapped around their heads that matched their snow white dresses. Infact, that's how Kiera would gather inspireation for her own dresses. By the time they were heading back to the manor, the sides of their dresses were stained with purple from the lavender.
As Kiera was taking a shower, she heard the bell from the dumbwaiter over the rush of the warm water coming down from the shower head. When she was finished taking a shower, she walked towards the dumbwaiter to find a surprise, a present. There was new fabric, reading material, balls of yarn with knitting needles, a bouquet of lavender, and a note.
Dearest Kiera,
Today is the day of your 17th birthday and as you now know from past visits, master has begged us to keep you up in the attic forever. We have been told to keep your secrecy from the outside as it is a tradition that your family has followed for generations.
We are trying to convince master to think otherwise, but master hasn't yet.
I'll come visit soon,
BartholomuleEvery year, Bartholomule would write Kiera a letter and would sometimes visit her in the attic. He would tell her about what was happening in the manor and she enjoyed his company.
Kiera spent the rest of the morning watching the TV that was already set up when she first came to the attic. She loved to hear about what was going on in the world. As Kiera was watching the television, she could hear footsteps coming from outside the attic. He was coming, and Kiera knew that today's visit would never be like any visit she ever had.
