Jackson POVWe arrived at the police station and were given seats in the processing area. Gabe sat in his Dad's office eyeing me like he was ready to lose round two. I've got to hand it to him, for someone who was as drunk as he was, he has a great right hook. I flexed my shoulder, I was the only one restrained by handcuffs which were purposely locked tighter than usual. The other people from the bonfire all sat freely, chatting up a storm awaiting their breathalyzer tests. After all that series of events, I finally now know the name of the Miss goody-goody.
Carolina, an Officer called out, she raised her head in acknowledgement. My halo girl name was Carolina.Who the fuck lives in the State of Carolina and has the name Carolina. I let out a low chuckle at the thought and gained her attention but she quickly looked away. Carolina was sitting two seats away from me nervously and anxiously picking at the end of her cardigan. She looked so innocent batting her eye's rapidly to hinder the tears that were threatening to fall. She failed miserably as she dismisses them with the back of her hand. This was her first rodeo I could tell. Strike one in the good books for Miss Goody Goody.
Sheriff Baker walked up to Carolina and asked her to follow him into a small room for questioning. About ten mins later a man rushed in and looked around the station frantically like a dog who lost his bone. He might have been around mid forties judging by the streaks of grey mixed into his deep brown hair. From the looks of the oil stains on his jumpsuit I could tell he was a mechanic. "Where is she?" He banged the clerk's desk at the front.
Sheriff Baker door opens and I could tell Carolina has been crying even more since I've previously seen her.
George: " Carrie!" He cried out and rushed over to her.
Carolina welcomed his embrace as she sobbed into his chest. I don't get it why was she crying this much, why was she letting this affect her so much, she didn't do anything wrong, she's innocent in all this. I guess Miss Goody Goody pretty little records weren't so pretty anymore. I watched as they all went back into the Sheriffs office again. It never took five minutes before I heard the Mechanic voice shouting again even angrier than before. Her Father exists the office pulling her with him towards the exit. Sheriff Baker gave the man a warning look and some officers stood at the door blocking them.
Sheriff Baker: "Now George you can pay the fine or have her show up in court. The choice is yours?" He said standing legs apart and gripping his belt.
George: " I'll pay the damn fine, to get my daughter the hell out of here and as far away from you and your son. I know Carrie and she doesn't drink and I know she would never force herself on your son."
Officer Baker:" the breathalyzer test doesn't lie, does it?" He raised a brow.
Now I see why his son is such a prick, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. He's was clearly covering up his son's track.
George: " You would tarnish a good girl's reputation to save your son wouldnt you? I thought the law came first, where do I sign." He asks the clerk.
George turned to me and gave me a long hard stare before signing out, its as if he held some type of hate or resentment against me. What the fuck is his problem I just saved his daughter from possibly being raped. My Father stormed in next and I could've sworn I saw, a lingering yet brief harsh eye contact being exchanged between him and George. Sheriff Bakers was busy giving me a stern warning and threat of restraining order from his son. I on the other hand was ignoring him so I could focused on Carolina leaving.
Sheriff Baker: "listen buddy I run a nice clean town and I don't want people like you ruining what I built here. So go crawl back to the hole you came from..."
Jack:"Now Sheriff Baker I thought you'd welcome my son with open arms into town... What if I told your son that when he needed a football scholarship?" He pats the Sheriff's back sternly. "Jackson stand so the man can remove your cuffs." My Father was wearing the fakest smile, similar to the ones on the billboards in town.
What a prick, I guess I'm the apple that didn't fall far from his tree.
Officer Baker almost cricked his neck looking dumbfounded between Jack and I. Yes, we looked uncannily alike more than I'd like to admit.
They went into his office and spoke for sometime, then I was free to go, no paper work, no nothing. The ride back home was silent, too silent. I wanted him to say something anything so I could curse him out, but instead I was left like a child to think about what I've done. I really had no remorse or care for him and his reputation, in fact it's about time someone lit this place up. Like I said, I was going to slowly sabotage his perfectly curated life here.I could see Jack was tired by the way he robbed his eyes. I glanced at my watch, it was 3 a.m. Time went by so fast, my plans from yesterday changed so quickly. We had now entered the estate and I was prepared to hear him shout at me in the privacy of his home, but he didn't even look at me, he just got out of the vehicle without a word and headed towards the house. This was new for me, my Mom would either be shouting, crying or begging me to stop my antics, sometimes all three. A new feeling began to settle in the pit of my stomach, guilt.
I stepped in my room and head directly for the shower. The hot water beats on my face and chest as I rinced the blood stains off my body. I wonder why Jack was holding back. After all, I was the child he never planned for in his early years. He was forced to marry my Mom and as a result he drowned himself with work so he'd never be around. His work obsession turned into greed for money and one day he decided he had enough, he didn't want to play the part of a father or husband and so he left. So in a way I had already destroyed his life plans, finances and reputation at an early age.
I wonder if Carolina has stopped crying yet. I think I like her better when she's feisty. It seems I won't be getting her to smile anytime soon so her scold will have to do. There is something cute about her whenever she see's me, her cheeks get fire red, she scolds at me with her eyes, while her forehead knits up between her brows. I know her type, a good girl who likes a bad boy who can only be good to her. If only she knew a leopard never changes his spots that's just how predators hunt.
I stepped out the shower with a towel wrapped around my waist, standing by my bed I saw a note folded in half on my nightstand. I walked over and picked it up, at the top of the note there was a drawing of a car with two boys inside smiling. At the bottom of the paper said "I am sorry" written in a childish hand writing. I opened it up and there were more horrible drawings which implied the tall guy on the right was me and the smaller one was Jake. Why was he even apologizing, I was the one who could've killed him. Again another unsettling feeling grows a size bigger in my chest, guilt.
I found my boxers and was ready to into bed when I noticed the covers on my bed were not as I left them. I lifted the sheets... What the fuck? Jake? He shuffled a little in his sleeping form and my mind ran questionly. Who allowed this to happen.
I'll let him stay the night but he better not return another night, I scold at him as I went to find pajamas. Afterwards I lay on the opposite side of the bed, my mind began to get clouded by the thought of Carolina again. She barely resembles her father, he was rightfully overly protective of her tonight. I could tell they had a close relationship, George seemed to have recognized me and something tells me he'll be a huge factor stopping me from pursuing my halo girl. I yawned as my eyes get heavier and I drift off into a deep sleep.
