Jackson POV
I was awoken by the weight on the right side of my ribcage. I peeped through one eye and I saw a leg in a spiderman pj's resting on me. Startled by the foreign leg in my bed I quickly removed it and sat up, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes to see more clearly. Oh it's only Jake. I'll have to tell his parents to keep him on a tight leach. I'm not looking for a big brother of the year medal. I didn't come here to join their happy family or whatever picture they've painted for their friends and this small town to believe.
After taking a shower and getting dressed the kid was still asleep. I poked him a few times, he only shuffled slightly, but never woke up to my torment. Well at least he's still alive. I'm gonna head out now to the main campus then swing by the bar later after classes for that job offer or whatever the hell it is he's proposing. I made my way downstairs to grab a muffin and a glass of milk when I heard hushed whispers.
Heather: "I'm not afraid to take Jake and leave..."
Jack: " I dare you Heather and I'll stop at nothing in court. I'm barely holding on to one son so don't you dare think I won't fight for him."
Heather: "I'm glad you mentioned barely holding on to one son because the court will only see you as a workaholic who left his first family and is now repeating his mistakes... So the caring mother wins the case don't you think?"
Jack: "Money makes the world go round don't push me to test your theory."
I walked in and they both looked surprised. Heather fiddled with the handle of the coffee mug.
Heather:"Babe you're gonna be late for work" she said kissing him on the cheek before walking out the kitchen.
Jack:"your riding with me this morning Jackson."
"Is that an order?" I challenged.
Jack:"Not this morning Jackson, I'm not in the mood. My other work car is still at the pound and I have news from your mother, since you won't pick up her phone calls."
"I don't want to hear anything from or about her coming from you." I said leaving him in the kitchen and making my way to the Range Rover.
"Great then pick up her calls." He said sternly.
He didn't waste time following me, not long after we were being chauffeured out the complex.
Jack:"I heard about your incident with Jake." He paused expecting me to snap probably, but I kept looking out the window."I blame myself. I never told you how different he was, I don't know, I was just eager for you guys to bond. He's a good kid."
"Yea well next time you'll know better than to shove your responsibilities onto other people."
Jack:"whats that suppose to mean?"
"It means the same way you shoved me off on mom."
Jack:"I've called and visited so many times to apologize. I'm sorry Jackson I wish I could go back in time. I was young and stupid and...and I"
"Yea I know, you don't have to explain I was one of your stupid mistake as a teen... Well guess what I'm still here, you should've told my mother to abort me if I was going to be such a bother. And for the record I never asked you to start caring now because I certainly haven't cared in years!" His mouth opened and closed. We sat quietly for a while.
Jack: "I deeply sincerely apologize and I'm not asking for forgiveness, I was absolutely wrong. And it's evident you don't care about me because I wasn't always there, but what about your Mother who was always was there? She stuck around and you've still been rebellious and resentful towards her for years. Caroline of all people doesn't deserve that Jackson and you know it?"
