***** Sorry I haven't updated in a while, writers block, couldn't get it all to mesh together. I should be back in the groove over the next few weeks though. Dragons Tower continues but first a recap from the last chapter.
I didn't know why she felt this way or why i was making promises to this complete, yet beautiful, stranger on the run from something she felt was so terrible. My blood began to boil and I had to know what exactly her situation was. So I asked again, " what is it you're running from?"
her sniffled answer was not one that I expected.
"my father you have no idea what its like to have all your free will stripped away from you. It may sound silly, but it isn't to me. He wants to lock me up in a tower so I can't run away until he is ready to use me as a pawn for more land and power. He doesn't even take care of the kingdom he has."
she clamped her hand over he mouth and looked at me in horror of what she just said. As if Marc knew what her next move would be he grabbed a hold of her bag with his teeth. He knew she was going to try and jump out having said too much and given away as to her identity. She sighed when I reached over and grabbed her by the arm of her jacket. I had to quickly defuse the situation.
"Lets face it, I'm no fan of the king either, but he pays good. You've let it slip that you're his daughter and your views on his politics are critical to say the least. Now you've trusted me with your secret, what if the next person that picks you up is a serial killer?"
"How do I know you aren't?" she looked at me with one eyebrow raised, obviously distrusting.
"I'm not. Trust me. I won't let your secret slip, scouts honor." I smiled to help encourage her to trust me and to lighten the mood a little quicker. For some reason I didn't want her to get out of my truck.
"Only a serial killer would say that." but she stuck her pinky out and made me pinky promise. I almost laughed at the childish gesture of it all. However, I had to be honest with myself this was the most fun I'd had in a while. Come to think of it, this was the only conversation that I'd had lately that hadn't been concerning a job. Man, I needed to get out more.
I was going to protect this woman at all costs, even from her father? What the hell am I thinking? Then it hit me, I am driving into town to see her father about a job. The same man she's trying to escape. I can't do that. So what do we do? Just skip it and take her someplace far away from here? Home with me? That's an Idea I thought, the people of my kingdom would love that. The prodigal son returns with someone other than his mate. I haven't really been home in five years now. Dad would be furious and Grand-pop would roll over in his grave. Mythicals took this whole mate thing seriously and most find theirs when they're about eighteen. I'm twenty four. Still unmated and I had to hear about it every time I came home. "how do you know she isn't our mate?" the thought ran briefly through my head and sparked other thoughts that soon spread like wildfire through a hay pasture. It would explain everything! Before I could prove either way, we entered downtown Charlesville and and I saw the city hall.
I parked and before I got out told Marc in draconic "protect her with your life" I watched her lower down into the seat and Marc took my place behind the wheel. I took one last look and made up my mind. I walked quickly inside and immediately came face to face with with a receptionist. I tried to clear my face of all emotion.
"You need help sugar?" her voice matched her face, stunningly unattractive. She was something you'd see in a very old movie. Big hair, obviously dyed, cigarette, and doing her make-up when you walked through the door. I was staring, she was waiting for an answer, I was waiting for her to pop her bubblegum.
"Yeah, I'm looking for King Charlie. I'm the Dragon he hired for a job."
" Oh?" her interest was disturbing, " A dragon huh?"
she came closer and smelled highly of smoke. I'm a Dragon, if you smell bad enough that even I can't take it, then you have a serious problem. I stood straighter and tried not to breathe.
"I'll let him know you're here, you're late, he won't like that." I didn't really need her commentary but I watched as she picked up the phone and dialed an extension. I moved to sit down, but never got the chance because the receptionist said, " He says he'll see you now, you'll be quite useful."
useful? Great, but I walked into the room that the receptionist gestured me towards and to my surprise I walked into a meeting of several men. Usually people who hire me through the agency want to talk in private.
King Charlie was at the head of the table arguing with King Earnest. I'd worked for Earnest before, he was more interested in what everyone else thought of him rather than what actually mattered. I flinched remembering the day I quit.
There was also a huntsman with dogs that all came to greet me which brought my presence to the forefront of Charlies mind. I was in dangerous territory.
****** So now that school has given me a few weeks break I'm Back! and I will update sooner. Sorry for the long delay. But please COMMENT VOTE AND FAN
also feel free to ask me anything that you'd like to know about the story and I will make sure to tie it into my next updates.
so what do you think? Are they mates? What do you think the Job will be? Why is King Earnest involved?
