Charlotte is hiding something from me and I intend to find out what it is. How do I know that she is hiding something? She has never hid something from me before. I know because I have seen her hide something from other people. Like the time she didn’t tell Jane that Zane had a crush on her, and Jane had her suspicions. Or maybe the time that she didn’t tell her mom that she was dating Jeremy John, the worst influence EVER on Charlotte.

I woke up to remember that I was at Charlotte’s house. I looked around the room to see all of my stuff. My clothes were in the tiny closet. My old knitted quilts and some old towels were also there. My old lamps and my alarm clock were on the desk. There was also my jewelry box. It was sitting at the feet of the door. As if waiting for me to see it.

I walked toward the door to pick it up. I laid it on the desk top and decided to make my bed. When I was done making my bed, I laid the jewelry box on the edge of the bed. I started to walk out the bedroom door when I heard Charlotte on the phone.

“Yea, well, I don’t want her to know about this… what did you say? Excuse me?! IF you tell her I will tell your secret to everyone you know!” Then she hung up on the caller in an outrage. I saw her stand up and start walking to my room. I ruined my perfect bed and got in to the covers. The door opened and Charlotte walked in to the room. She looked perfectly fine, but she wasn’t fine. She was in a terrible mood.

“Hi, did you have a good sleep?”

     I nodded.

“Good, we have a busy day ahead of us.”

I gave her a questioning look. She started to explain.

“We have to go talk to the insurance company about the, well, you know, incident.”

I didn’t know what my face looked like at the moment of time, but it probably looked half upset and half confused about Charlotte’s phone call.

“So, um, how long have you been awake?”

I could tell that she was trying to see if I heard her phone conversation.  So I didn’t want her to know that I heard. So instead, I just sat there and showed the number 2 on my fingers.

     “2 HOURS?!”

     I nodded my head no.

     “2 minutes?”

     I nodded my head yes.

Her fiery eyes blew down as she changed the subject.

“So I’m going to make some breakfast, and then when we are done eating we are going to go to the insurance company. Are you okay with that?”

I nodded in agreement. She walked out of the room and I looked at the closet. I opened the door and threw on an outfit. It was kind of cute I guess, but honestly, I just threw it on.

For breakfast, Charlotte made the most amazing French toast in the world. It was absolutely delicious. It didn’t last long, because we were on our way to the insurance company before 8:30. That’s early for me.

It was a tough time at the insurance company.

The insurance company could only afford to give us was $9,417. For Charlotte and I, it wasn’t much. Not enough for me to survive a year on my own. So Charlotte decided that I would stay with her until they saved enough to buy a new apartment. I wasn’t going to decline this offer, because I have nothing left to go to.

We got into the car and started for Charlotte’s. I felt like there was something I was supposed to remember. Charlotte must have remembered because she jogged my memory.
