Icekit, followed by Lionkit and Harekit, crept silently out of the nursery. It was sunrise, and so there wasn't many cats awake yet, besides the dawn patrol and camp guards.
Icekit tried her best to hide in the shadows of the trees in the forest that they called home, though her snow-white pelt didn't help to blend in with the dark green of the newly-grown Newleaf grass.
Harekit helped, though, sticking to Icekit's exposed side to block her practically glowing pelt.
She kept her tail wrapped around her hind leg, so that it wouldn't stick out like a snowy tree branch, keeping low to the ground.
Her pawsteps were light, hardly making a sound against the soft -and somewhat damp- grass.
Lionkit trailed behind them, keeping watch. His thick golden fur didn't help much to blend in either, but it was better than Icekit's white pelt.
Icekit's whiskers twitched, creeping along the edges of the bramble and thorn walls that lined the area, feeling the sharp plants poking her side. She headed to the entrance of the camp, pouting slightly once she found that it was being guarded by the two cats in camp that had the best eyesight, meaning she had little to no chance of escaping without being spotted. She looked at Harekit. "What now?" She asked quietly, ears twitching.
Harekit studied the area. ".. We can dig a hole under the thorn barrier." She suggested, claws digging into the ground.
Lionkit nudged them slightly. "Better hurry." He muttered, looking around frantically. "They're starting to wake up."
Icekit nodded and buried herself as far as she could under the thorns, which wasn't very far, disliking how they dug into her skin. She took a deep breath and began to dig, tongue poked out in concentration.Harekit slithered in beside her and began to help, while Lionkit stayed out, keeping watch.
After a few moments, Icekit managed to squeeze under the barrier and through the little tunnel they had made, popping out the other side and nearly smacking face-first into a tree.
She spun around, tail high in the air. "Come on, it's safe!" She whispered excitedly, ignoring the thorns and little twigs stuck in her fur.She stared at the hole, and seconds later, Harekit's head poked through. She clawed her way out, shaking out her fur. "Lionkit, you're next!" She squeaked out, squirming impatiently.
Icekit paced back and forth, considering just leaving Lionkit behind. "Come on, if you take any longer, we'll leave without you!" She said, groaning slightly.
She heard a low grunt, spotting a little pink nose slowly nudging its way through the brambles. "I'm bigger than you both!" Lionkit grumbled, pulling himself further out, collapsing halfway. "My fur is tangled." He hissed quietly.Harekit purred, coming forward and grabbing Lionkit's scruff, yanking him out.
Lionkit whined and grumbled, trying to claw his way out while Harekit pulled on him.
Eventually, they had gotten Lionkit out, though his fur was completely tangled and full of thorns, all fluffed out.
He glared at Icekit, stopping her little purrs of amusement almost immediately. "Let's just get this fox so I can get cleaned up." He grumbled, shaking his fur out.
Icekit led them away, the scents of cats slowly fading away behind them, being replaced by the smell of grass and prey. Overwhelmed slightly, the three kits sat, looking around nervously, suddenly realizing this wasn't going to be as easy as they had thought.
"What now?" Harekit asked after a moment, and both her and Lionkit looked at Icekit, seemingly deciding to make her leader. Icekit huffed. "Well, I suppose first we have to make a plan." She told them, getting comfortable in the grass. "So, have you heard what kind of fox it is?" She asked, getting confused looks from them both. "Well.. It's reddish orange, has brown feet, and-" Harekit said slowly, only to be cut off by Icekit. "No, no, not like that!" She groaned. "I mean, is it a cub, fully grown?" She kneaded the ground with her paws impatiently. Lionkit hummed, thinking. "Well.. I remember Horsepaw saying that it was the size of her." He said slowly, shrugging. "Which I would assume means that it's a cub."
Icekit unsheathed her claws, beginning to draw in the dirt. "Okay, then we'll do this." She sketched out a little area, explaining to Lionkit and Harekit what she was planning. "Lionkit, you'll go in the den." She said, glancing up at him. "You're bigger, so you can scare the fox out easier." She looked back at the dirt. "Harekit, you're the fastest. You can wait by the entrance of the den and chase the fox when it comes out." She made little marks, showing who goes where. "I'll be waiting in the trees a little bit away, and attack the fox when it comes at me. You two can help, if you're not too scared." She purred, sheathing her claws again, shaking out the dirt. "Good plan?" After receiving nods from them both, she stood. "Then let's track down this fox."
It took a while, but they had found the scent trail, following it to the den.
Icekit stared at the hole in the ground. "Ready?" She asked, looking behind her at Harekit and Lionkit.
Lionkit nodded. "Alright.. I'm going in." He slowly crept forward, squeezing into the hole.
Icekit nodded to Harekit, and the brown she-kit took her place in the entrance of the den.
Icekit ran off, hiding herself behind a tree, having a perfect view of the den.
Moments later, a ginger blur shot out from the den, Lionkit following. Harekit immediately dashed after the fox, eyes narrowed in concentration.
Icekit wiggled her bum, flattening herself to the ground, getting ready to attack.
She raised her head and let out a yowl when the fox changed it's course, heading in the opposite direction. Icekit joined Harekit and Lionkit, chasing after it, panting slightly. She dodged trees and thorn bushes, yelping as she leaped and tackled the fox, hitting its side and knocking it over.
She grabbed a hold of the fox's foot and dug her teeth into it, growling and yanking harshly.
The fox growled and whined, flicking Icekit off easily.
She flew back and hit a tree, falling to the ground, letting out a yowl of pain as she landed awkwardly on one leg, feeling it bend and let out a little popping noise.Lionkit climbed on top of the fox and hissed, slicing at it's side and belly. The fox barked furiously and jumped up, kicking Lionkit off, running away.
Harekit chased after it, ignoring Icekit and Lionkit yelling at her to stop.Harekit raced through the trees, eyes trained on the fox. She didn't even realize the smells of camp coming nearer, until she crashed through the thorn barrier, yelping in surprise and hearing screeches and yowls.
She skidded to a halt, eyes wide as she saw the fox trampling over dens and the fresh-kill pile, snarling at cats and barking.
She pressed against the ground, scooting backwards, only to bump into something.
She whipped around, becoming face-to-face with a furious Lightningfrost. The she-cat grabbed her scruff and yanked her towards the nursery, putting her in a nest. "Stay here!" Lightningfrost spat, running back out.Harekit couldn't see anything, face buried in the nest and her own fur, whimpering. She heard the barks of the fox and multiple meows and yowls from the Clan, trying to chase the animal away.
Oh StarClan.. What have we done?
