It was just an ordinary day for this small town that I just moved in. I looked outside the window as the sun beamed in my eyes making me almost blind. Birds chirping outside, movers unpacking our stuff from the boxes, and children laughter filling up the whole neighborhood. It was such a beautiful day in this small town. My eyes suddenly landed on a two couple as they stare deeply into each other's eyes. I thought to myself how nice would it be to fall in love with someone. My mother looked at me and smiled, "Why don't you go out?" She asked me as she laid down the tray of a sandwich in front of me. I was startled at her sudden presence in the room. She looked outside where I was staring and chuckled at me. "I can't," I said as I looked back at the two sweet couple snuggling into each other arms. My mother looked at me and gave me a small smile, "Just wait here." She said. I looked at her in utter confusion as she left me alone. When she came back, I was shocked by what she held in her hands. It was the dress that she wore when she met my father at the pier. She told me stories how they met. My mother was at the pier with her friends then when my father saw her. She said it was instantly loved at first sight and the rest of it was history. I shook my head, "I can't take that." I said as I gently pushed it back to my mother. She looked at me in full of excitement, "Your father would have loved it if he saw you in this dress." She chirped. I looked outside the window as silence fell upon us, "Father isn't with us anymore." I said. Her happiness suddenly fell with a frown.
I looked at her in pithiness. I didn't realize how much the words I said to her was hurtful. I tried to say something until I was cut off, "I'll just go and help the movers." She said as she rushed out of the room. It tore my heart to see her like this, ever since my father died, my mother was utterly a disaster. I still remember the day when the commander came knocking on the door with a face full of sadness and a storm of heartaches. The moment when he broke the news to my mother that my father has died during the war, she was torn. She couldn't believe what she heard; the commander couldn't do anything but just to watch her as she broke down.
I remember where every single night I could hear her sobbing and the cries from the other room. Sometimes, I would see her drunk in her own sadness as tears would never run out from her eyes. I remembered when I spoke to her, "Mom, are you okay?" I asked her. She gave me a small smile, but I knew inside her eyes; she was torn. That was the moment where I realized all I want to do is protect her.
One night I went to her room with flowers in my eye. Her eyes were pure red, her face pale, and dried tears all over her face. It broke my heart to see her like that, she gently wiped away the tears from her eyes as she deeply stared in my eyes and gave me the sweetest smile ever, "No matter what happens in life. Just know sacrificing is part of life whether if it's big or small. Life is just full of mysteries and we just need to know what we're going to expect." She said. I didn't know what she meant until when I finally understood the meaning of sacrifice is.
