Amani's POV
"Ammaaaaniiiii, lets go already, you are already late!" i hear my dad yell as i was applying final touches to my makeup, not that i was wearing much. I preferred a light and natural look to enhance my facial features rather than the drag queen look.
"I'm coming down, just a minute." I replied grabbing my heels, going downstairs and putting them on. My mother began complimenting me endlessly and trying to take photos even though she knows very well how much I dislike it. I found that posing was just awkward, I liked photos to be natural and capture moments unexpectedly.
"Take a look at you, my baby all grown up. I wont be surprised if i get calls from mothers asking for your hand for the sons." Oh no, not this again.
"Look at the little sissy, you look like an actual Disney princess." He wiggled his eyebrows teasingly. I shot him a death glare and before i could give him the chance to start with the teasing, I told them I was late and headed to the car with my dad.
"What time would you like me to pick you up darling?" my dad asked as he started the car and began to drive off.
"Around 11 would be good." Considering it was Saturday night, and there was no university tomorrow, mum and dad allowed me to stay for longer.
My phone began to ring, I looked to see that it was Fari calling and answered.
"WHERE ARE YOU?" She screamed into the phone so loud that it was deafening. I felt my organs beginning to shake.
"Wa alaikumusalaam to you too, thanks for hurting my eardrums."
"sorry habibti, salaam, where are you?"
"I'm on my way, ill be there in 10 minutes."
"okay, see you then, I need to go help Nour with her dress, bye."
"Okie later."i said and ended the call.
We arrived at the hall, and soon i joined Fari and Nour in the back room. The wedding was going to begin in 20 minutes time, and Nour was panicking but was thriving with excitement. "Girls, i am gonna miss you two too much, i can't believe it, I'm going to live in Australia and leave you guys behind."
"We are always going to keep in touch over Skype. Now let's stop talking about the sad stuff before we begin a crying competition and ruin our makeup."
Nour was called out to the hall when it was time. The wedding was separated from the men, it was magnificent and beautifully decorated. The theme colour was red and white with roses filling up every corner and every table.
Soon, after the cake was cut, and presents were given, it was time for the speeches. Fari went first and then it was my turn, i hated public speaking so i decided to keep my speech short and simple, "Fari and I met Nour at University. We instantly loved each other after sharing some classes. She is an amazing and inspiring soul, with a fun and bright personality. Throughout the three years we knew each other, our days were filled with laughter and joy. But now it is time for our beloved to begin a new journey in her life with her husband and although she will be leaving us behind, our hearts will forever be together."I couldn't help but shed a few tears during the speech so i hurried to the bathroom to fix up the damage that I've done to my face.
After i made sure my hijab and makeup were perfectly fine, I exited the bathroom and began to walk back to the hall. As i was walking in my ten meter high heels, i took a wrong step and suddenly lost balance, i closed my eyes as i began making my way down to the velvet blue ground. Time became ever so slow. To my surprise, I found my body fall into the comfort of a persons arms rather than meeting with the cold hard ground. I let out the breathe i was subconsciously holding and opened my eyes to met with a pair of rich blue orbs looking at me with such an intense gaze. I felt like i could stare into them for forever when reality hit back and i realized i was in contact with a man, a non mahram. ASTAGFIRULLAH. i shrieked and jumped up finding my feet and looked up at the man when his features finally formed a face in my mind.
"Are you alright, i didn't mean to startle you but you were falling and... " Yehya explained to me with eyes looking towards the ground. His face consisted of guilt and surprise as he continued to mumble.
"uhh.. im perfectly fine." i exclaimed. The air was filled of awkward silence before i broke the ice. "Thanks for saving me from a horrible injury, i should get back to the hall now."
"yea of course, see you later i guess." Yehya said before we began to walk our separate ways. What on earth just happened? i desperately need an explanation. A few minutes back i was admiring the eyes of Yehya, the man i knew from my childhood. I shivered and shoved the thought and memory of what just happened out of my brain before looking at the time. 10:38, my phone read. I called my dad to let him know he can pick me up now.
I reunited with Fari at the buffet who was not so surprisingly enjoying a plate loaded with vine leaves and gummy bears. "what took you so long?" she questioned, not that she was going to hear my answer, she was too busy.
"Fari its almost 11 i should get going."
"same, i should go call Yehya so we can leave too." We went to Nour and sadly said our goodbyes, it is going to be the last time we see her before she leaves. We don't do well with goodbyes so we made it quick so that it didn't seem like a farewell after all.
Ten minutes later, Fari, Yehya and I walked towards the outdoor gates when my phone began to ring. It was my dad calling, he was probably a few minutes away and was going to tell me to wait outside for him.
"Assalam wa alaikum dad", I sang after picking up the phone.
"Hello, is this Amani Malek?" I heard an unfamiliar woman's voice as she said my name awkwardly. Who is she and why does she have my father' phone?
"Yes, who is this??".
"I am Samantha, a paramedic. Your father has been involved in a horrible car accident and is terribly injured. We are on our way to the hospital. He has asked me to dial your number before he lost conciousness to inform you. He is in an awful state and perhaps may not make it. Please make your way to the hospital immediately."
As every word left her mouth, my mind was closing in on me more and more. NO, No, this isn-isnn't possible. My daddy, my baba... My legs no longer functioned and were bolted to the ground. I started to feel incredibly light headed and sick to the stomach. The world began to spin in hundreds of directions after my phone slipped from my hand and landed in pieces. The last thing I remember before falling to the ground was Fari screaming on top of my body and shaking me. My eyes, my vision was getting smaller and everything went black.
