“Mr. Ichi!” A substitute teacher yells from across the classroom full of senior students. In this classroom all of the students are working hard to get their work done, except one- a boy with messy bed hair that sits along side of the window. This boy has a daily routine of staring aimlessly out the window, his name is… “Kensuke!” the teacher calls out to him for the second time as he slams his hand on his desk. Kensuke turns his head towards the teacher reacting to the noise.
“Sorry Mr. Brown, what happened?” Kensuke questions.
Mr. Brown gets a little agitated from the way Kensuke responded. “I hope you have finished your work, since you have been looking out of the window for the past 20 minutes.” At this point everyone in the class is paying attention to the conversation.
Kensuke smirks and affirms, “Yes I did finish my work.” He then grabs his paper from his desk as he stands up and walks over to Mr. Brown. “I am sorry I did not turn it in earlier, I just did not see a reason to do so,” Kensuke says as he hands over his work. All the students in the class sigh with disappointment since the substitute took Kensuke’s paper without any remark. About 15 minutes later, the bell rings and all the students quickly grab their things and head to the door. As Kensuke walks out the door way he hears his name being called out.
“Hey Kensuke wait up,” A boy from the same class calls to him as he approaches Kensuke.
After turning around, Kensuke answers with an uncaring expression, “Hey Jean”.
“Man you always impress me how you are always the first one to finish your work, how do you do it?” Jean asks with cheer.
While Kensuke listens to Jean, instead of making eye contact with him, he curiously stares behind Jean.
“Hmm Kensuke?” Jean says as he seems to notice that maybe Kensuke is not listening.
“Yeah I am listening, and I don’t know man, I just seem to know the answers as soon as I see them. I think you just need to study more.”
“Hmm yeah I guess so,” Jean answers disappointed, “well I have to go home. See ya,” Then Jean redundantly leaves.
Kensuke waves his hand up as Jean leaves and also walks away to the exit.
In his way home, Kensuke stops by a small pet shop to buy some cat food. Walking out of the store, Kensuke holds the door as if he was holding it for someone, although there was no one passing through. Kensuke has always been like this. Even while walking in the sidewalk, he walks in way that seems like he is moving out of a person’s path. It was strange but normal for him.
“I am back paws” Kensuke says as he opens the door to his apartment. His apartment is small and simple, with a bed, desk, chair, and a bathroom to the left of the room. There are clothes from the morning all over the floor. “Sorry paws, I know you don’t like to live in this messy room, but what can I do.” He walks over to his bed and sits next to his black cat. “You don’t want to leave so you need to deal with my messy habits.” He chuckles as he pets his cat below her ear. “Well I am beat today so I am going to take a quick nap, wake me up in about an hour ok?” Paws looks over to him as he falls asleep, the she purrs and lays next to him. So far this is Kensuke Ichi’s life, simple and redundant but that is all about to change.
