"You ready?" Talia whispered as we set out the cutlery and plates for the meal we were preparing.
For the past three years we'd managed to scrape by, telling our parents we were just friends and nothing of a more serious sort. We'd moved in together a while back, it was more spacious than the dorm and we didn't have to share showers with a hundred other people. It just made sense really.
However tonight, we were getting our parents together, and they were both going to be told of our upcoming wedding.
Of course we were both a little scared, we'd never met the others parents, and there could possibly be drama between them.
knock-knock-knock
"Oh no, someone's here."
I started to panic.
Talia rolled her eyes and approached the door.
"Talia! 6:30 exactly as asked." A male voice announced.
I knew relying on my parents to be on time would be a push.
"Hi dad, come on through, Jasey is in the den."
Talia walked back through with her parents. Danny was tall and although he was going grey he still had traces of dark left in his hair, despite being the less fortunate side of 50. Jess was petite with long golden curls that didn't stand out to me as dyed, but from Talia's stories I knew they were.
"Hello Mr and Mrs O'Donoghue, I'm Jasey Rae. How lovely to finally meet you."
"How lovely to meet you too Jasey, such a beautiful name." Talia's mother spoke softly.
"Oh thank you, it's a blessing and a curse I must admit."
"Mom, Dad, this is my friend Jasey, her parents will be here shortly, so you can socialise."
"That sounds wonderful Tal." Her father said boisterously.
I'm sure he wouldn't be so confident when he found out who I was.
"Jasey dear, you remind me of someone I used to know, from a very long time ago." Danny said approaching me.
"How strange." I choked.
knock-knock-knock
6:40, just as I expected from my parents.
I got up to answer the door when my dad waltzed in.
I ran out to them, leading them to a side room to de-brief them.
"Jasey why are we in the bathroom hun?" My mom asked.
"Right I need you to be cool with this okay.
Talia's dad, is...um..."
"We don't have all night."
"Sorry, her dad is Danny."
"WHA-" My dad started before mom put her hand over his mouth.
"Well shit." She whispered.
They looked at each other and linked hands.
"Let's do this."
We walked into the den and I started to introduce them when Danny enveloped my dad in a hug.
"Alex, long time no see. I'm sorry for everything. I really am."
"Hi to you too Danny. Shall we call it quits?"
"Good idea."
I glanced at Talia and her mouth was hanging open, and she was struggling to speak. So I took control.
"Right guys if you'd all like to come through to the dining room we can sit down and eat." I led.
As everyone sat down me and Talia stood up, she tapped a glass and everyone turned to us.
"Right guys, the real reason we've gathered you here tonight is to tell you something. Something we've been meaning to tell you for a little over 6 months now." I started.
"We're getting married in 3 weeks." Talia finished.
"Oh sweetie we knew to an extent." Jess admitted.
"We did too." My mother interrupted. "We were just waiting on invitations. You can't tell Tom and us not find out."
The rest of the night went smoothly, we played board games and drank a little too much.
And 3 weeks later, me and Talia tied the knot, celebrating that as of last year we could have chosen anywhere in the country to get married.
How we lived our life however was spent different to the norm, but you were just here to hear if our parents made up right?
