After about five minutes of looking we were reunited with our parents.
We ran as fast as we could to them and hugged them as tight as we could. "Thank goodness you boys are alright we were worried sick to our stomachs.
"Thomas we knew you would come here" said their mom.
Being in the shelter sucked so much but it was way better then dying. There was nothing to do but talk, sleep, eat, drink and read boring literature like the girl magazines. Well the magazines were boring to Ben but not to me.
"When do you think we can go home" Ben asked dad "I don't think we have a home now because of the shockwave." "Stupid shockwave destroyed our home." " Yup."
Another few painful hours passed then the mayor announced that there is a military base nearby and they might've survived the attack and that a few people should volunteer to go and check since there are not enough radiation suits for everyone.
"Mom dad I'll go to the base." I said "No it's to dangerous" replied my father. " Your father does have a point."
I was thinking of ways to convince my parents to let me go, I did not want to be sitting around and do nothing when so many people were dying. My friends are probably all dead too.
"Look I want to help everybody in the fallout shelter and reading those girl magazines aren't going to help us" But actually the magazines aren't that bad.
Finally my parents let me go.
"Thank you and do not worry I will be safe." I hugged my parents said my good byes then walked off towards the mayor.
"Well well well who do we have hear" The mayor asked. "Thomas redworth at your service." " The radiation suits are over there and make sure there are no rips in the suit."
I walked over to the suits and found one that was around my size I checked the suit for any rips but there was none.
I suited up and was given a pistol as last resort I case of an emergency. I was also given some water, food,a first aid kit and some tools they were all packed in a small backpack.
When the last of us volunteers were ready to go the crowd moved into the back room while the volunteers opened the doors.
"Alright boys lets move out." said one man.
We were going to the other fallout shelters first before we go to the military base.
When we reached the first one we knocked but there was no answer so we opened the door but instead of people that were alive there were bodies scattered across the floor.
" Well that was a surprise how did they die?" I asked. "It must've radiation or they suffocated." a man said.
"Oh well that sucks" The group moved onto the next shelter they knocked and someone opened the door.
The man was dressed in a radiation suit there were a few others in the shelter. "You have come to save us" The man said in an Italian accent.
"Umm we are from one of the other shelters" I said. "Oh, well you can take us with you" "Lets go."
We started walking in the direction of the military base, I was told that it would take until tomorrow afternoon to get there. We were halfway when we heard the sound of engines. "What's that" a man shouted and pointed. "It's a fighter jet" I shouted.
But we didn't see what country it was from, the fighter jet was heading straight to the base then it disappeared from the line of site. A few minutes later they heard explosions, the fighter jet was from a different country.
"Damn it that was like our only hope of finding safety" The Italian dude said.
"Well now we do know that our country is under attack"
"Umm guys what's that noise" I said. It was a low rumble noise. "The dam it must have been destroyed in the bombing." a random dude said. "Run!" I yelled.
A wall of water bursts out of the trees it was effected by radiation, there are sharp objects in the water because it's picking up debris. So if something tore someone's suit they would die from radiation.
There was a scream that came from behind me then it was gone a second later. " We lost a man" I yelled. There were two more screams after that then the water started to slow down. We found the three dead and carried them away.
It was night by now we were supposed to arrive in the morning.
We set up camp made a fire and cooked some food there were three people on watch for every two hours.
"Thomas get up its your turn for watch" I had no idea who said that but I sat up and kept watch. I have to admit it was scary there were all these noises just beyond the trees.
Then I saw movement I grabbed my gun the next time I saw the thing move I started to fire everybody woke up and grabbed their gun there were gun shots from every direction, finally the gunfire stopped.
A man named Evan went with me to go and inspect. We went in pairs so that we had each others back. We found one of the guys he had a radiation suit on, there was also an ak-47 beside him.
Underneath the radiation suit was a army uniform, we were really at war with another country.
In an hour it would be morning we started to pack up, then headed off. We got back later in the evening it was a beautiful day except the fact that we were carrying the dead back from a small mission that turned into a gun fight and our small group running from a wall of water.
Goodness gracious it was crazy.
We arrived in another thirty minutes and when we got back there was a surprise waiting for us...TANKS.
