Assembly
It was Friday afternoon and everyone was sitting in the general assembly hall waiting for the headmaster to arrive. All sixth period classes were cancelled because of this. I was sitting beside Samantha and Kara who I found out also specializes in salsa. She was also a part of our dance group.
"How did your first week go, November?"
I sighed and gave Samantha an answer even though I didn't really want to.
"It was okay. I have a lot to catch up on, but I'm managing."
"You'll be fine. You're a quick learner. You've already learned most of our basic routines."
"That's why they're called basic routines."
"They're not so easy, trust me. It took some of us a month to master them. You're doing great."
"Thanks."
I appreciated Samantha's confidence in me.
"Do you know why the headmaster called us all here?"
"I have no idea, but I'm sure it's something good. The headmaster doesn't like to waste time."
I knew that better than anyone. I still wasn't over our first meeting.
"He's here."
Everyone stopped what they were doing and focused on him. How could one man command the attention of so many people without even saying anything?
"Good afternoon. As you all know, the regional dance competition is in six months. As is our tradition, the dance group with the highest points will represent the Academy there. However, for the first time this year we have a tie for first place. Both teams have a total of four hundred and fifty points. As this is an unusual situation it has been decide that both teams, Dynamo Boys and Girls Dynasty who are tied on points in first place will have a competition of their own to decide which of them gets to represent the Academy at the regional competition."
Groans went up from everyone around me. I turned to Samantha.
"Is that bad?"
"You have no idea how bad it is. There's a reason we're tied with them."
"Are they that good?"
She nodded.
"The competition will be in a month. That should give both teams enough time to prepare. The professors and I have already picked the general category. "Cultures from around the world". As for the actual type of dance you will be doing, the captains will come up here and draw from these bags until we have a winner. The professors will then make the final decision between the two. Both teams will have to compete to the decided dance."
Things went quickly after that. I was called up along with a boy I'd never seen before. We picked different types of dance from a basket eliminating them as we went along until we both had one left. One of them would be the winner.
"Reveal your cards," the headmaster said.
We turned our cards around at the same time. There were some cheers and some groans. I knew which belonged to which group.
