As I was introduced to my large room, apparently next door to Emerald’s, I could feel my heart rate increase; why was I staying here? What did they want with me? Wasn’t there a way that I could stay at home and still have their protection?
“Your things will be delivered to your room shortly,” Nightwing told me, standing in the doorway. I was almost drooling over the sight, but my Mother had always told me it was rude to stare, so I tried not to. Speaking of my mum, how would my parents be looked after, seeing as Scarecrow wanted me?
Nightwing began walking off, before I called him back, sitting on my bed. He leaned on the door, arms folded over the blue bird symbol on his chest. “Yes?”
I looked at him, pondering the thought. “Do you know what’s happening with my parents? Will they be alright?” Nightwing shot me a look, a mix between jealousy and empathy.
“Yes. They’ll be alright. We’re looking after them…” he nodded and his voice started to go off into other thoughts as he began to leave again.
“Well, you seem confident with that!” I shouted after him, crossing my legs and smirking. He started to walk back, an eyebrow raised at me under his eye-mask.
“You’re certainly the Queen of Sarcasm, aren’t you?”
“I try. It’s a hobby of mine.”
“Perhaps you should find another hobby.” And with that, he was gone, soon replaced by a smiling Emerald, who was standing excitedly by my door.
“Can I come in?” she asked, trying to sound as kind as she could. I nodded and motioned her into my room, lying back on my bed and staring at the ceiling. She sat next to me, so I moved over a bit, granting her more room to sit. “You and, uh, Nightwing seemed to have had a fun moment just then.” She winked at me knowingly, but I refused to acknowledge the meaning behind what she had just stated.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Sure you don’t. I saw the way you were looking at him when you first saw him. Drool-fest if I ever saw one!” I crossed my arms defiantly and scoffed in denial.
“How would you know? Besides, we’ve only just met. It’s not like I can fall for him by only seeing him and talking to him a few times.” Emerald smirked at me knowingly, thinking there was definitely more than what there seemed to be, but she was the only one. I was standing by what I had said because it was the uttermost truth. Love at first sight was never an ideology for me, no matter how hot the sight might have been. And in this case, I might as well have been on the moon, looking out at the sun.
“Believe what you want, Missy! I know what I saw, and you were checking him out!” She stood up and winked at me, yet again, before turning to walk out.
“Right, because you know all about me, especially my name!” My sarcasm was more obvious than I intended it to be, but Emerald just faced me, smiling, obviously humoured by what I had said.
“I can tell body language, thank you very much. And what is your name, anyway? No one ever tells me anything.” Her jade green eyes glistened as her moderately wavy hair fell over them, the red streaks in her hair becoming obvious.
“Why would you want to know? I’d be too busy spending time with Nightwing, remember?” I winked back at her, a smirk complementing my expression. Emerald simply shook her head, still smiling.
“Just tell me! We’re gonna be spending a bit of time together, remember, seeing as you’re now staying with us until the B-man decides otherwise!” Emerald was being very persistent, giving me the best puppy-dog eyes that she could muster.
