avia
I stared blankly at the ceiling, little pieces of sunlight shining through the empty patches. I felt so numb. I felt like my innocence and knowledge had been ripped from my fingertips and they left me to bleed and question everything.
My nose was stuffed, causing me to breathe through my mouth and hurt my sore throat even more. My lips were chapped, my mouth dry. I felt terrible.
I turned my head towards the door as a muffled conversation got closer, then stopped as Thomas stumbled through the door.
I smiled softly. "Hey." I croaked, sitting up from the bed.
"Avia, how are you feeling?" He asked, sitting at the end of my bed and looking at me with worry.
I furrowed my eyebrows. "I'm fine.." I said, avoiding eye contact as I stared down at my lap.
"I feel blank, ya know?" I said, looking up at him. He stayed quiet. I sighed, shaking my head as pain shot through me. Stupid Gally.
I ran my fingers through my greasy hair, cringing at the waxy feeling.
"Shower?" He asked, breaking the silence. I nodded.
"I can join," he said, taking me by surprise. What the shuck? I furrowed my eyebrows and looked at him with disgust.
"Join you on the walk there." He said quickly, worry etched into his features. Right. I rolled my eyes and stood the best I could, stretching as I closed my eyes and tossed my head back.
I let out a sigh of relief and straightened, looking to Thomas only to have him look away with the tips of his ears pink. I scoffed and decided to find the showers myself.
After wandering for ten minutes, I finally found the shabby stalls. I sighed, realizing they weren't as protective and safe as I'd hoped. I gave in and stepped inside the small space, peeling the dirty clothes from my body and throwing them to hang over the wall as I shivered slightly from the absence of covering.
I looked down at the rusty faucet, scrunching my nose in disgust as I turned it all the way to the left. I stood back, waiting for the water to get hot. I stared at the cement below my feet as I thought about everything once again, my eyes getting watery. Stop crying, I yelled mentally. I felt weak and small. I shook my head to get rid of the thought, stepping under the high faucet.
I yelped in shock as the cold water pelted against my back like the spines of a cactus. I stepped back, looking down at the knob to see it was fully to the left. I groaned and stood under the cold water for God knows how long, my body eventually going numb as I stared at the wood surrounding me.
I wondered about my family, my friends, my life before he glade. Did I go to school and have good grades? Was I popular or picked on? What was my family like? Did I have all brothers or all sisters, or did I even have any? Did we live in the country or in the heart of the city? The thought alone caused my chest to ache and my heart to shrivel up. I was thrown into this glade with 30 other boys I didn't even know just to be left with unanswered questions and no respect.
I casted my gaze to the floor, my tears blending in with the dirty water that fell from my body. Disgusting.
When my back felt bad enough, I decided it was time to get out. I turned off the faucet, shuddering at the cold wind whipping against my bare body.
Clean clothes.
I hit my palm against my forehead, forgetting about clean clothes let alone a towel.
"Hello?" I yelled, looking through a hole in the stall to see if someone walking by could help.
"Newt? Thomas? Chuck?" I yelled a bit louder this time, hoping for someone to hear me. Nothing.
I groaned, deciding my dirty clothes would have to do. I stood on my tiptoes, pulling the covering from the wall and putting it on as I gagged from the smell. I really stink.
I took a deep breath, looking over myself in disgust before stepping outside, only to be bombarded with my name, and 'greenie.'
"Avia?" Alby said his voice laced with worry as he leaned over with his hands on his knees to catch his heavy pant.
"The greenie," he said, then took a deep breath. "He's asking for you." He finally finished.
"If he just needs to speak to me then why is everyone so... Anxious." I questioned, hoping he didn't smell my awful aroma.
"No, Avia.." He said, finally catching his breath. "He needs you in the maze."
