AVIA

My breath hitched and my blood ran cold, the low repetitive beat of my heart echoing in my head.

"The maze.." I repeated, casting my gaze to the ground and resting my hands on my hips. I can't do this. I thought I'd be strong enough and ready for anything but now its actually happening, and my feet seem glued to the ground.

"Yeah.." Alby muttered, his demeanor changing to nervous like me. I groaned, putting my hands over my face to try and stop myself. I wasn't prepared for this, and I could die. I'm not a runner, but neither is the greenie.

"What's he doing in the maze anyway?" I asked, peeking through my fingers to find Alby with an amused smile.

He shrugged. "Got curious. Listen, Minho is going in with you to help, but he said that the greenie won't come out until he sees you."

I scowled, confused at why the greenie even needed me. I mean, I have no memory of him whatsoever, but he obviously remembers me. I sighed, hanging my hands at my sides in defeat.

"Fine, I'll do it. But only because that greenie's helpless on his own." I said, putting more confidence in my voice.

He smiled, looking relieved as he grabbed my wrist, pulling me outside. Everyone was gathered by the maze doors, and I couldn't help but scoff and roll my eyes. Greenie gets stuck in the maze, big deal.

Alby pulled me to the front of the circle, grabbing my wrist as he raised my arm up. I winced at his strong grip, causing him to send me a glare before turning his attention back to the other gladers.

"Avia's going into the maze. Minho," he said, his head snapping in the direction of the broad boy. "Are you ready?" He asked, receiving a simple nod. He nodded as well, dropping my wrist and stepping aside.

Minho stepped forward, receiving shoves and trips, snickers coming from the other's mouths. I rolled my eyes, turning to walk into the maze.

Minho quickly ran to catch up, giving me a look as if I was alien to this world. "You can't just run in here," he said, shaking his head.

"Ooh, you catch on fast. Where to?" I snarled, stopping at a fork as he immediately turned left.

"What are these vines for?" I questioned, trailing my fingers along the mossy covering. He shrugged, sharply turning right and I groaned.

He let out a small chuckle, turning ti glance at me with a raised eyebrow. "They help you find the way back, no hurry up." He snapped, beginning to jog as I groaned and followed.

After what seemed like thirty minutes of running, we reaches the greenie, and boy was it hard not to laugh. He was gripping the vines tightly, looking around with panic stricken features. I ran my tongue along the inside of my cheek in attempts to suppress my laugh, but I failed miserably.

"What're ya doin' down here?" I questioned, crouching in front of him. He avoided eye contact, looking at his lap. I frowned, noticing his grip was shaky and my snarky attitude disappeared.

"We're leaving, alright? It'll be okay." I reassured him, grabbing his hand as I stood up. Minho eyed the two of us, his eyebrow raised.

"Okay." Was all he said before he turned to leave, causing me to sigh as the greenie and I followed him.

Minho glanced at his watch, cursing under his breath as he began jogging toward the entrance.

I furrowed my eyebrows, glancing at the greenie. "What's wrong?" I asked, following after him quickly.

"The doors clothes in fifteen minutes." He stated, picking up his pace. I felt my heart drop, immediately breaking into a jog.

Just stay calm, I thought, don't over think. But I started to do just that. What if we didn't make it in time? What if we were trapped here for the night? I took in a shaky breath, staring ahead of me.

"Hey," the greenie said quietly, appearing beside me as I jumped a bit.

"What?" I spat, feeling guilty the minute the spat out the word.

"Are you okay?" He questioned, worry etched into his features and I felt my hurt clench.

"I'm fine," I confirmed, nodding and sending him a smile.

"Shuck, hurry!" Minho yelled as he started running and I felt my stomach twist, starting to run. It was hard to keep up with the two, since their legs are longer. Minho made tons of sharp turns that almost got me injured, but I don't care, I wanted to get out of here.

A loud bang through the air caused Minho to curse as we rounded the corner, and my hopes were crushed as the doors began to close. The sound of metal against metal made us all shout, covering our ears. The ground was vibrating with the heavy movement, and I felt tears well up in my eyes.

"Run!" Minho screamed, and I ran. Even though my legs hurt a bit, I still ran. I've heard stories of people never making it through a night in the maze, and I didn't want to be one of those people.

We were almost there, about 30 feet away now and my heart leaped. I would actually make it!!

The entrance got closer, everyone's voices echoing through my ears as we got closer. I didn't realize the doors were closing, until they shut. Completely shut, locking us in.

We all stopped in our tracks, staring at it. The tears fell down, and a small whimper escaped my lips.

"Well," Minho said lowly, turning to us with a clenched jaw.

"Welcome to the Maze."
