I lay in bed, utterly unable to move. I had no strength, the fever had taken my whole life from me. I would die of it, definitely within the week, if not within the next few days. Papa promised to save me, no matter what, from death. I do not want to die, but I do not want ill to come to my father.

"Katie? Katie darling, you need to eat. I need you to eat." Ma called for me but I could barely hear her, and I couldn't eat even if I tried. I was going to die.

The handsome stranger had come to town a summer ago, and already had quite a name for himself. He was successful and polite, never danced with the same girl at the balls, except me. I was the one who got at least one dance at every ball, who he sat with once the dancing was done. The town was filled with tanned, weathered skin, hair bleached blonde by the sun, and blue eyes that were carried by pretty much everyone. But he had green eyes, and brown hair, and skin as white as bone. I walked with him now, like a bracelet on his arm, a trinket. I think he cared for me, but I could not explain how I did not care for him.

"Katie? Katie, sweetie, this is Ferrum. Ferrum's here to save you." Whispered Pa anxiously. I could not even move my eyes to look at him, I could only blink lazily. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see a white-skinned, silver-haired, silver-eyed man. He walked around me and sat on the bed, lifting me to his chest.

"She will not be your daughter anymore, once I do this." He warned my father. What was he doing? Why wouldn't I be his daughter anymore?

"As long as she lives," My Pa replied. I began to struggle, but the man's grip was like iron. He put his mouth to my neck and sliced through the skin and flesh of my shoulder with his teeth, until I felt the uncomfortable tapping feeling as his teeth touched my bone. Cool spread from the wound he created, taking away the pain. My skin became white, my nails sharp and strong, my whole body just changed. My hair, which fell to my lower back, just disappeared, leaving only short, black hair, falling gently around my face. It was a boy's haircut, but I liked it. It was so me.

"Offer her your neck." Commanded a voice, a man. The other man, startled, offered me his neck. I lunged, taking it in my teeth and piercing the vein, taking the blood. I didn't need much. I pulled away from him, and my head cleared. That was my father! Distressed, I got out of bed, feeling endlessly graceful and ungainly in my new body. I couldn't decide whether to move normally or fast, to stand still or not.

"I'm not breathing." I whispered, but even as I took in air to say it I was experiencing a myriad of scents. I could see the surrounding area, just based on scent. And hearing. Ferrum smiled at me, almost imperceptibly.

"You need air to talk, or smell, but not to survive." He explained. I nodded to show I understood.

"Katie? Are you ok?" Asked Papa. I glared at him instinctively.

"Midnight. My name is Midnight!" My voice rose to a yell. Papa glanced out the door in distress.

"Katie, your mother might hear." He implored.

"MY. NAME. IS. MIDNIGHT!" I screamed. Mama came rushing in, and I took a step back, my instincts preparing me for an attack. Ferrum was at my shoulder in less than a second, but this time I could track the movement, it didn't seem as instant as before. He put a hand at my shoulder protectively, and I stepped back to stand with him.

"I warned you, Tobias. We'll go now." He explained. Taking me by the arm, he led me from the house, as quick as I could move. I brought us to a stop just outside, at the sound of screams from within.
