Chapter One: The Virus
It had been two years. Only two. The first patient of the virus died, and came back in under 48 hours. No one really ever named it. Family died and so did friends. I was one of the lucky ones and so were my friends. For the school holidays we had planned a camping trip. There were 6 of us.
Kris was tall and fit with brown hair and was good with his hands, things like electronics and cars usually took his interest. Jack was also tall and fit but had dark blonde hair and was learning some hand to hand combat techniques. Patricia was a bit short with black hair and wore glasses. She was great at film production and writing. Laura was also tall, wore glasses and had dyed her hair red, as in actual blood red not orange. She enjoyed relaxing but was very good with complex things like medicine. Jodie was about the same height as me and had blonde hair; she had a lot of experience with the outdoors and animals.
Then there was me, Connor. I have a strong interest in psychology which is always useful at some point. I have dark brown hair. We are all just about eighteen years old. We were all typical teenagers who like their clothes simple, enjoy reading a book and listening to almost any type of music together at night. I don't think any of us world prefer a different group of friends.
We had tents, sleeping bags, torches, batteries and water, typical necessities for camping. My parents were the ones with us; it was annoying how they still treated us like kids. We were sitting around a fire listening to music when the radio went off. We just thought the signal went out, so we went to bed. The next day it was back, but not music. It was all evacuation commands, saying something about "the virus". We were all terrified. I was with my family but my friends weren't. Their phones still worked so they called them.
Patricia's parents were the first to die. What made it worse was that she was on the phone to them when it happened. She didn't talk for days. After about a week of staying at the camping grounds Laura lost contact with her parents, she was sad but hoped they would find somewhere safe and tried not to think about what would happen if they didn't.
We were all fishing when Kris's sisters both told him that their parents were dead and that they and some friends were going to try and find a boat, the last thing they sent him was "keep in touch". Jodie also lost contact with her parents after a while. It was scary to see the human race stumble and fall over something like this.
The last person to lose contact was Jack. He wasn't as bad as the others. His mum had said she was going to her sister's farm, away from the cities. It was a month before we lost my parents. We had gone down to the river to clean ourselves when we heard screaming. We ran back to find our camp crowded with the sick, all of them trying to rip my parents apart. I yelled at them to get in the car and go.
They did, but as a last resort. Thankfully, they threw our bags out so we had something other than the clothes we were wearing. Jack still had batteries, a book and his laptop. Patricia had a flint and steel along with her camera. Laura had a small water bottle with a filter along with a book on first aid. Jodie had brought some fish hooks and a small whistle that was used in hunting. Kris had some money, CDs and some small tools. I had brought my own laptop, a book to read, headphones and a knife. We all also still had our phones. Our tents were still up so we led the sick away and doubled back for our sleeping bags and clothes. We knew we couldn't stay there anymore so we went deeper into the bush.
We were listening to music, having a laugh. Not really thinking about what was going on. I remember Jack started playing music off of his phone; it was fun until his battery died. We all sang together. It was a great memory ill always have. We found a cave and decided to stay there for a while. A river ran through it so we had plenty of fish to eat thanks to Jodie's hooks and somewhat clean water to drink.
