Walk around as if you own the place. That was the clue, but still I couldn't help to glance carefully around. I hoped nobody was noticing I was lifting some things high in the air with my mind. And then, when the things had reached me, I would lower them and they would suddenly disappear in my backpack, weird right?

I came across a stall which sold freshly baken bread and I stopped in front of it, pretending to search something in my pockets while I kept an eye on the owner. When he turned his attention to a customer I started walking again and lifted a bread in the air. I grinned when it landed in my hands but my smile quickly faded away when an angry voice shot through the air.

"Ey! Stop the thief!"

Shoot! I glanced back over my shoulder and saw the man of the stall pointing at me and the people around me started to move towards me. I dodged them and started running while avoiding the many people who tried to stop me.

"Stop the thief!" the man screamed again but it was not as loud as first, I was a great runner. I shot into an alley and runned until I came by another crossroad. I went right but till my suprise, I bumped right into someone. It was as if I had hit a wall and I stumbled backwards, falling on my butt and the bread flew out of my hands and it landed straight in a... Puddle. Of course, just my luck.

"Did your parents never teach you not to run in busy places?"

I tore away my look of the bread and looked up. The man to whom I had bumped into, had turned around and held out his hand to help me back on my feet. I couldn't see his eyes because he wore sunglasses with a red shade over it. I took his outstretched hand and he pulled me back up.

"I'm sorry," I apologized and again I glanced at the soaken bread.

He followed my glance. "No, I'm sorry. Was that yours? I'm so sorry. Allow me to buy a new one for you."

"Eh..." I started. If he was going to buy a new one, we would be going back to where I had come from.

"That stall around the corner, right?" he said, I couldn't see his eyes but I was quite sure he was staring at me a bit curiously because his eyebrows were both raised.

"Eh..." I said again, not sure how to respond. "It's fine, I'll buy a new one myself. After all I bumped into you, so..." My voice trailed off.

"You there! Hold the thief!"

I'm sure I went pale when I heard the voice of the salesman. The man I had bumped into looked over my shoulder to see where the voice had coming from. I tried to run but he grabbed my shoulder to stop me. Ashamed I looked up to him, I couldn't hit him to escape. Not him, who had been so nice to help me back up on my feet and offered me to buy a new bread. Perhaps it was time to face the consequences. I turned around to the salesman who was running our way, and the man's hand was still resting on my shoulder to prevent me from running away.

The salesman stopped in front of us, slightly puffing. "Thank you, gentlemen, for stopping this little thief."

I stared at the point of my wore-out shoes. I was about to form an apology but the man was faster.

"Here, this should cover the expense."

Suprised I stared aside, he was offering the salesman a ten dollar bill.

"Sir...?"

"Just take it and leave us."

The salesman hesitated but then took the money. "If I see her stealing again, I won't be that compliantly."

The man nodded. "Of course, but it will not be happening again."

I frowned. How could he make such promise? He didn't even know me, and I was quite sure I would be stealing again within half an hour. I had to do it to keep myself alive and no, I won't beg for money. So the only option left was stealing. I was doing it for years now, one man's promise wouldn't change that.

"Very well," and the salesman left, putting the money in his pockets.

"Why did you do that?" I questioned him and the man shrugged.

"I understand why you're stealing. Your clothes have seen better days and you look like you're starving."

"But that's -,"

The man raised his hand to silence me. "Besides, we have been looking for you, Diamond Storm."

Wait, what? How did he know my name?

He chuckled. "I couldn't have offered you a spot on professor Xavier's school when you were in jail, now could I?"

What? I was very confused and I wasn't able to say anything for a while. "What school?" I finally managed to ask.

"A school for gifted youngsters."

"Do you mean what I think you mean?" I wondered if it was possible there were others like me.

"I think we both know what I meant."

I laughed a little. "Are there others?"

"They're all around us," and he gestured with his hands to everywhere.

I observed him. "Are you gifted as well?"

He tapped against the side of his sunglasses. "I'm a mutant, yes."

There was a little silence between while I tried to get my thoughts together. But I only had a few burning questions left. "Who are you? And how did you know who and where I was?"

"I'm Scott Summers but the rest I cannot tell you, yet. If you come with me professor X will tell you everything you need to know."

I bit my lip, should I do it? Should I trust this stranger and go with him to the school for gifted youngsters?

Then I decided I would. What was the worst that could happen? I decided to take a leap of faith.
