Wide Awake

Olivia listened to the wind whistle through the tree branches as she stepped into the cool Autumn air. The full moon spread its heavenly glow, illuminating  the entire area of which she was standing. Being out in the country, her favorite place to be, she could see the stars perfectly. Sitting on the bench near the old oak tree she relaxed. It wasn't to hot, or too cold. It was silent, all but the sound of crickets singing into the night time. Olivia closed her eyes, and then, she woke up

"Olivia! Time for school." Her mom called from downstairs.

Olivia pulled herself out of bed, slightly upset that she had to leave her perfect little dream world. She could control what happened in her dream world, she had been able to for as long as she could remember, but in the real world it wasn't as fun.

"Olivia, we're leaving soon."

"Coming mom."

Olivia pulled on a black shirt with angel wings on the back and some old jeans. Slipping into her high tops she stumbled downstairs. Grabbing a bagel and a sip of orange juice she ran off to meet her mom in the car.

The ride to school was long as always. Living out farther in the country than most there weren't any nearby schools. She attended  Mountain Valley Jr. High. It wasn't her favorite place to be by far. It was dull, and awful. Six hours off sitting at a desk doing work surrounded by people that she didn't even enjoy the company of. There was only one person she liked hanging out with. Her best friend Lisa. They did everything together.

When she finally arrived at school she was already five minutes late. Punctuation was not Olivia's best quality. She pulled her backpack up onto her shoulder, and trudged through the grass toward her homeroom.

"Olivia Fernfield, late again." Her homeroom teacher spat, adding a dirty look.

"Sorry Mrs. Logan." Olivia mumbled in response, sick of her teachers nasty attitude.

After an eternity of roll call and announcements she was dismissed to her first period. History, her most boring class. Taught by Mr. Fratz this class dragged on for hours. All you do is read from a bunch off dull textbooks and talk about people who are long gone. Olivia let out a sigh of relief when the bell finally rang, dismissing her to second period English.

Olivia also didn't really like English. Not the class, just the concept. Her teacher Mrs. Geniveve was really nice, its just that why would she need to learn English if it was already her first language. The whole thing just seemed completely useless and a waste of time.

"Okay everyone, I have a project for you." Said Mrs. Geniveve. "What you will do is research a certain type of mental state and present the impacts of it to the class next week."

After one of her classmates had passed out the assignment sheets Olivia grabbed hers off of the table, looking at it once before unzipping her backpack and shoving it in somewhere in her English folder. Then it was time to get started. She grabbed a laptop from the computer and walked back to her desk. After what seemed like countless articles on different mental states Olivia was frustrated and about ready to give up. She had been looking at different mental states for a while now and there was nothing that jumped out at her. Everything just seemed so boring and too dull to even talk about.

Finally the bell rang, and she headed to science. Mr. Norte was her favorite teacher, he always had the coolest demonstrations. Last week he taught about the laws of Newton.

"Today we will be talking about buoyancy. I will now give a demonstration of how this works."

Mr. Norte did some different things with water and certain objects, talking about water displacement and how the work. Olivia watched, taking notes every so often.

"Remember, no homework tonight." Mr. Norte finished off with before dismissing the class to lunch. Olivia's favorite subjest.

She met up with Lisa outside under the oak tree grove. It was where they always sat. The shade was comforting and it was also farther away from everyone else. Even better.

"Hey Lisa. Whats up."

"Not much, just took a math quiz."

"Yikes, how did you do?"

"Pretty good I think, at least a B."

"Nice."

"Yeah, hey Olivia, what did you dream about last night?"

"Just that I was relaxing in the yard outside. It was nice."

"Cool, in mine I had superpowers."

"Cool."

Lisa was one of Olivia's best friends because she could also control her dreams. They understood each other very well and could spend hours just talking about their dreams. And sometimes, they did just that.

The rest of the day seemed to drag on lazily. Not much happened. Nothing really ever happened in her town. There were a few assignments from her other classes, but Olivia finished them quickly. They weren't that hard anyway. Olivia was looking forward to after school. As soon as the bell rings Olivia walks with Lisa to Lisa'a house and they hang out until her mom comes to pick her up later that day.
