    "oh, hello," she smiles.

    she's reading 'romeo and juliet'.

"hey, didn't think i'd run into you." i hope the grin doesn't give it away. "i've never actually read 'romeo and juliet' you know."

silence. "i mean, everyone knows the plot but...uh, yeah."

she doesn't look up from the book but she makes a clicking sound with her tongue. i pull out my phone. (am i bothering her?)

she closes the book and holds it in front of me, "read it and bring it back on laundry day okay?"

"do you always trust strangers with your books?"

"only the ones who strike me as promising."

    i raise an eyebrow, "promising."

she shrugs loosely, her face is quizzical. "i'm going to be honest; i've never given a random bloke a book of mine before."

    she offers her hand, "anjali."

    "hm?"

i realize she's offering her hand and her name and my cold hands meet her warm ones, "oh -oh, lovely name, anjali."

her smile is yet again amused and i wonder if she thinks i'm stupid, absentminded, or both. "xavier. simply delighted to meet you."

"your mock-british accent is terrible," she laughs.

our conversation builds into comfortable acquaintanceship; we talk until the dryer buzzes and she says goodbye.
