edmonton has somehow persuaded me to come to a party. i don't even know who's hosting it but we've been walking for ten minutes and the streetlights are on.
"i look like a nerd."
he shrugs, "because you are a nerd."
"shut up. "
"you would rather stay in your flat and study for a non-existent test than go to a rager?"
"i would rather pass class than fail?"
he snorts, "priorities."
i give him a look and he shrugs again. we walk through the doors of the small flat and some mainstream song blasts. the air feels thicker and the people around me are sweaty. it looks like the typical party scene you would see in a movie, except there are less people.
"it's jacob's party-"
some guy comes up to us, grinning and smelling like strong alcohol. he passes me his cup and walks away, giving eddie a pat on the shoulder. i put the cup down on the table behind me.
"-and apparently the land lady's out of town."
i heave myself onto the countertop and note that the counter is sticky. "trashed house, wasted people, the whole thing?"
eddie gives me a prideful smile, "you know your stuff, kid."
i give him a thumbs up and he fills two red cups and passes me one. it's the typical red solo cup.
"why is it that everyone always buys red cups," i say it more as a statement than a question.
"excellent observation, donahue."
i take a cautious sip and remember that i'm most likely going to be walking home in a few hours, not looking forward to staggered walking and throwing up on the road. i take a coke can and tell eddie i'll be back in a few.
water is starting to drip the cold can of coke is i walk upstairs and knock cautiously on the nearest door. nobody answers and i push the door open. it's dark and there's a figure sitting inside the bathtub. i slap my hand to the wall and feel around for a light switch.
"you can leave the light off if you want."
