Dear Valerie,

Feeling uncomfortable talking to strangers is super common, about ¾ of all people will understand how you feel.  One reason why we are all so paralyzed by crowds is because we feel they’re judging us. We can almost hear their every thought criticizing us, but it isn’t true! People are much more interested in what it is you’re saying than how you’re saying it.

Let your inner awesomeness shine when you talk to people! Everybody has an amazing character that they don’t need to be ashamed of. Of course, this doesn’t mean you have to be bold with a stunning speech or anything. There is nothing wrong with a regular presentation- just don’t be afraid to look at the crowd with a smile.

And definitely don’t be afraid of messing up in front of people because everybody has been there. Everybody has said something stupid, stumbled over their words, or forgot their lines. Anybody who says different is a liar.

Ok- if this is something that you want to overcome, here are some tips (both some oldies and fresh ideas)

-don’t look directly at the crowd, look at the back of the room

-pretend you’re confident even if you’re not

-instead of focusing on whether or not you’ll do good or if they’ll like you, focus on how you can give the audience the best possible presentation.

-Imagine you’re talking to a friend!

-Know your presentation so well that you only need a small index cards with a few notes so if you forget what you were saying you can just look down. All the information will come flooding back to you. Seriously, trust yourself.

-Take big breathes- oxygen helps the brain work

Dear Sophi,

When you talk to people, you say you clamp up and flush a bright red. This is really common! Not to mention blushing is really cute!! Most people understand that some people simply can’t talk to others and won’t try to force the issue. Honestly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with having trouble talking to people. It is a rational fear, common, and the shy girl card is really cute.

If you are looking to overcome this there are plenty of websites and books you can read. I’m afraid I can’t help you myself because I’m not exactly a social butterfly. And don’t feel like you must be a people person because it isn’t necessary. Not everybody is like that and not everybody has to be. As you get older and get a job and are forced to interact with people, your social skills will naturally grow. However, when somebody says hi to you, say hi with a smile. That’s it; don’t feel like you have to carry on a conversation because you’re not obligated to do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing.

Keep Smiling,

Hatter
