Mind Palace

It's all well and good having a mind palace, but when you're dying and you're gone and it's time to say goodbye, it's hard to open the door and simply breathe in all of the memories you've stored up over the course of your life.  It's hard to walk into your palace of memories and open the doors for the last time because you don't know where you'll go when you've seen your life for the last time, but you won't have those memories anymore and your body will be empty and then burned or buried.

Where do you go when you're dead?

Where does your soul go?

There has to be a place.  Maybe everyone goes to their mind palaces for good and they're locked in an empty room somewhere and they have to build everything back up again.  Maybe the palace is cleaned out and then people start over as something else.  But then the question is why.

Why do people have to die?  Chairs don't die.  The sky doesn't die.  Why do people have to die?  Why give them hearts only to break them again?  All lives end.  All hearts are broken.  It doesn't seem like life ever was very promising to begin with.  Why even bother at all if you know you're just going to die some day anyway?

But then, just when you think you should give up, you see that face.  That one face that makes you feel like you could fly.  The way that person's eyes sparkle and they way they smile.  It just gets to you in a way you thought you could never be touched.  It's called love.  It's called hope.  And everyone, even the ice man, feels it.  Then people have something to live for.  They live for that face.  To see it smile again.

So maybe people don't live for themselves.  It's not a game about survival.  It's a game about winning and you win when you die because you made that person smile at least once and maybe it takes you a lifetime to understand it, but the only reason you were made was to make that person better. Different.

The only question is what to do once you've done that.  Once you've loved until your heart breaks.  What to do when you've done your best and you've played out your mission.  Then the world ends you.  It congratulates you by showing you the light.  The light is the way out of the labyrinth of life, and only those who have completed their purpose get the key.  It's a reward.

But then why do the bad people die too?  If death is really a reward, then why do the bad people get the reward as well?  So that means that there are different places.  A palace for the good and a dungeon for the evil.  It's so blindingly simple that everyone should be able to figure it out by just really thinking about it.  But if it's so simple, then why does it take a lifetime to figure it out?

Why does death make us the wisest?

Because we've seen everything we cared to live for.
