Dawn's POV"That outfit is super cute. What do you think?" my best friend Alyssa says slurping on her drink. I'm not paying any attention. I'm too busy checking out books in front of the bookstore, the only thing I find intriguing.
So if you hadn't guessed it we're at the mall! Something I personally wouldn't do if it wasn't for Alyssa begging me to come. I rather be at home, snugged up with a cozy book to read or some boring history homework to do... I know it's not particularly ideal, but being in the general public with loads of people has never exactly been my favorite.
Alyssa and I on paper seem to be quite the opposite. She loves to shop, I hate it. She's popular, I'm not. She gets all the boys, and sadly, the only "boy" I interact with is my father.
But there is one thing that we both have in common, and that one thing is, we're both werewolves. Yep, those big hairy creatures that turn into wolves when the moon comes out, yeah we exist, only less hairy, well some of us...
"Ugh. I take you to the mall to get away from you doing boring things, and what do you do? You go into the bookstore!" Alyssa exasperates putting her hand on her head.
"Dawn c'mon. I want to go check out those shoes!" she points excitedly to the store across from the book store, where you could see a whole bunch of shoes in the window.
"They're on sale!"She exclaims."B- but I don't want to check out shoes. I want to stay with the books!" I whine as she drags me away from the shop.
"Dawn, what is it going to take me to get you to stop being such a nerd!" Alyssa says, as she struggles to hold all of her shopping bags. The bags slipping off her shoulders and resulting in almost dropping a big pink bag. I grab a couple from her before they fall to the ground and she shoots me a grateful smile.
"Hmm, let me see... How about you buy me a pretzel, then we'll talk," I say.
"Really?" she says, her blue eyes full of hope."Haha, no. But can you please buy me a pretzel? I'm starving!" I say, rubbing my tummy with crazed eyes. She looks at me in annoyance and gives me a stink eye, she goes through her purse and pulls out a five-dollar bill. I squeal and run to the Auntie Em stand.
I come back with a pretzel and a wide smile on my face. OK, so let's address the elephant in the room. "Since their such opposites, how are they even friends?" Well aside from our social status being on totally different levels, and I mean TOTALLY DIFFERENT LEVELS. We kind of balance each other out, and when we were in pre-school she fended off bullies in my honor...
But most importantly, we also have the same pack, The Eclipse Pack. Where Alyssa's father is the Alpha and my dad is a pack warrior. So I guess to answer the question, we've basically know each other since birth. That's how it's always been and that's all we really know.
"Let's grab a seat, my feet are getting tired," Alyssa says dragging the bags in defeat, her pink pumps finally weighing her down.
We grab a seat. Alyssa puts her bags down. She then proceeds to comb her alburn hair with her fingers. A pretty shade of copper that's not too red, semi-natural, but nice enough to be looking salon quality. She looks into her compact mirror to make sure not a single hair is sticking up. Then she reapplies her lipstick that she takes out from her channel purse. I just gave her a sour look throughout this-
"What?!" she exclaims.
"I like to look good."
"I didn't say nothing," I say shrugging and looking around the food court. Tucking in a couple of loose strands of hair back into my bun. Just as I was about to take my hidden book out from my bag, three boys approach us. I shrink back in my seat automatically, eyeing them cautiously."Hey!" One boy with curly hair and dimples says.
"My name is Josh, and that's Miles and Chase," he says as he points to his two other friends. All of them resembling the kind of boys you would find surfing and calling each other "dude" way too many times.
"I saw you from across the court, and I just thought to myself, Josh if you don't come up and talk to this pretty girl you're gonna regret it. So on that note, I was wondering if I could get your number and take you out sometime?" he says charmingly. I roll my eyes at his proposal, and also at the fact that he didn't even acknowledge me.
"Sure," Alyssa says, batting her eyelashes.
I lean back further in my chair already knowing where this is going and internally cringing. She takes out a pen and paper and writes her number down.
"Well, great!"
"Um, I didn't catch your name. What is it?"he asks with a smile, his friends behind him grinning like idiots.
"My name is get lost," Alyssa says changing her attitude completely. At her sudden change of attitude, he looks confused and then proceeds to read the paper she gave him.In large cursive handwriting, it read NOT INTERESTED.
"Oh," he says discouraged, his cheeks going red. He quickly turns to walk away, ashamed and with his friends snickering behind his back.I sit back up.
"That wasn't nice," I say with a pointed look.
"Please I'm way out of their league, and why did you want his number? I mean-" she says seriously. But I cut her off.
"No, that's not what I'm saying, but you could at least not have embarrassed him in front of his friends." I think back to that kid's red face and his friend's snickers.
"The problem is that you are way too nice. It's not that big of a deal," she shrugs off. At that, I keep my mouth shut and continue to nibble at my pretzel, no longer hungry.***
We pull up to my house in Alyssa's red convertible.
"Thanks for going shopping with me D," she says, as she hugs me.
" Yeah, of course," I mumble, pulling my bag over my shoulder.I open the door to my house and wave to her as she drives off.
My house is a nice built, not too small and not too big. It's not fancy or anything or remotely like Alyssa's house. But I like it that way, it feels more like home than any big house would feel to me. I search for my keys in my bag and pull the white door open.
"I'm home," I shout, walking in I see my eleven-year-old sister Ella on the couch. She's too smart for her own good but way too nosy to be around in serious conversations."Where's Mom and Dad?" I ask taking off my shoes at the door.
"I think they're out helping the pack. They'll be back soon," she says, turning back to continue watching cartoons.
"Ok." I head up to my room, changing into my pajamas, and combing through my soft brown hair. My brown eyes look tired and dull from a whole day of shopping through my mirror. I jump into bed and pull the blue covers up to my face.I lay awake thinking about school tomorrow and how scared I have become of my current predicament. I'm 17 turning 18.
Meaning that this is the time where people start to get their mates. I think the whole process is pretty terrifying to put it in nicer, simpler words. I just have so much I want to do. So much life I want to live, and I feel like the second I get a mate it's over. I know it may seem dramatic to think such things. Most girls my age are over the moon at the possibility of a mate, but I can't think of anything scarier...
I just hope that when I get my mate, he doesn't reject me. The thought of that sends chills down my spine and is enough to turn the contents in my stomach upside down.
Rejection is awful. It's like one of the worse things out there for a werewolf to go through. It not only breaks your wolf's heart, and yes they feel, but it leaves you in limbo for the rest of your life. I've heard that after some werewolves get rejected, they're no longer the same person they were before. More like a shell of themself, and that's enough to put me off the topic completely.
I don't want to be caught all up in these thoughts, but it seems like all I can think about now and days.
I shift to the other side of the bed.
Alyssa won't have a problem, though, finding her mate, I think to myself as I drift into sleep.Well, this chapter took quite a long time to finish but it was worth it. I'm soooo excited that I started this book, and I'm soo glad that you have decided to be apart of this journey. Please vote and comment. Byeeeeeee!!
