“Pleeeaaassseee,” I begged.

“The answer is no,” Stacy said not looking up from her book as we all sat in the reading room.

While at Laura’s, Sara apologized a million times for not trusting me. And then she started thanking me very annoyingly for saving Laura’s life. I mean, how clingy can a person be? After she finally cooled down from her pushy feelings, we had dinner. At dinner, they announced that they all are going to be going away to New York for Christmas and New Year’s and they wanted me to go with them. So here I was, begging Stacy to let me go. She was very stubborn and kept saying no without any explanation.

“But why? Laura is going.”

“Laura is part of their family. I don’t want you going with them.”

“Stacy, be reasonable, just let her go,” Kyle said.

“Don’t get into this Kyle, I don’t want her to go and that’s final.”

“What is your reasoning.” Stacy was silent. “See you don’t have one.”

“Yes I do.”

“Then what is it?”

“I don’t want her around Paul.”

“Paul? What’s wrong with Paul?”

“You know what’s wrong with him. Don’t you know his history?”

“What history?”

“His girl history.”

“That’s not that big of a deal.”

“Not big of a deal? He likes everything in a skirt, he doesn’t care about the age. I don’t want Mona to go there. She’s 17 and he’s almost 20. She is rather pretty. Have you seen how he looks at her? Like he would eat her on the spot.”

“Stop exaggerating.”

“Whatever Kyle, you men are all the same,” she said leaving the room.

“You know you like it,” he yelled after her and I raised an eyebrow. I love how they talked about me like I wasn’t even there.

The next morning I was depressed. I really wanted to go with Laura. It was Christmas and New Year’s in New York. It was going to be so fun…I imagined. Life was so unfair. I sulked in my room all day. The maids brought me food up to my room, and I only picked at it. I know, I probably looked like and acted like a spoiled brat, but I just didn’t feel like seeing anyone because I was feeling very upset.

As evening was approaching, I finally took a shower and was sitting on my bed sketching, when there was a knock on the door.

“Come in.”

Stacy walked in and came to sit on the bed.

“Alright, you can go.”

“Really?” I jumped up.

“But only if you promise to call me 2 times in those days.”

“I promise,’ I said holding my breath. I was afraid if I breathed it would all blow away and I wouldn’t be able to go anymore.

“Can I get red high lights?”

“What? NO.”

“Why not?”

”I don’t like using those types of products on hair. It damages them.”

After she left, I called Laura and told her the awesome news. This was going to be great. We started to pack together, while talking over the phone. I asked her what to pack and she asked me. I couldn’t wait for tomorrow, when we would be leaving. I also wondered what made Stacy change her mind. We didn’t sleep that night either. We talked and talked all night. She was describing New York to me and all the places she’s gone to and places we would be going. I tried imagining it all in my mind. From what she described it was awesome and picture worthy. I was definitely going to bring my sketchbook with me.

The next morning, as I was brushing my hair, Kyle showed up in my room. In his hands was a small black box. He looked kind of awkward, fidgeting around, looking for a place to sit, stand or searching for words to say. I decided to help him out.

“Hey Kyle, what’s up?”

“I uh,… I got something for you.”

“What is it?” I asked laying my brush down.

“I know it’s not exactly what you wanted, but I think it will work. I asked the girl at the store.”

I was now very curious what it was. Not exactly what I wanted but would work? What was it that I wanted? He handed me the box and I opened it. Inside, were strands of red hair connected to clips. I’ve never seen extension before, so I had no idea how to react. I looked up at him with a confused expression.

“It’s hair extensions,” he explained. “The girl said you can clip them inside you hair and it looks like you really have red highlights.”

“Are you serious?”

“Yea, and you don’t even have to dye your hair. If you attach them properly, they can last up to 30 days, and you can do all your normal hair routines without taking them out. There’s instructions in there.”

“Thank you so much Kyle,” I got up from my bed and went over to hug him. I was an awkward hug, but he smiled and left.

At first, when Stacy saw my hair, horror was written on her face. Then I explained what it was and she relaxed. Laura came to pick me up and after saying goodbyes, that were almost tearful, we left. New York, here I come.
