The following morning, I woke up feeling a hundred times better than the day before. I stood from my bed and walked into the bathroom. Ari was standing there brushing her teeth. I went straight to the sink I claimed as my own and washed my face. Today my eyes were incredibly green and it was intense. I liked it.
"What are your plans today?" Ari asked me, fixing her hair.
I shook my head. "Not much. Hale asked me to help him teach a class today. So I will be heading down there."
"What class?" Her eyes lit up.
"The first one."
She jumped. "That's mine!"
This time I nodded. "I know. So, let's get a move on, Ari." The both of us went back to our bedrooms and changed into clothes for the day. I went with my normal jeans and a grey loose fitting T-shirt with a pair of black combat boots.
After dressing Ari and I headed to the cafeteria for breakfast where we gathered our blood and waffles and ate with Derrick and Sofia. It was a little surprising to me that Sofia just started hanging around after yesterday. It also made me wonder why she hadn't been before.
Breakfast went by way too fast and soon Ari and I were on our way to Hale.
Walking into a classroom full of kids was definitely weird. I hadn't been in an actual class in a year and when I was supposed to be in a class three fourths of the time I wasn't.
Hale settled the class down when I walked in and he greeted them as per usual. "Today, we do have two special guests helping me."
Two? Who was the other? Just as the questions rang in my head, Jace walked in.
"Thanks for joining us, Jace. Today, Allison and Jace will be demonstrating how to fight for you life. This will be a real battle between the two of them. The champion and the strongest female hybrid we have here at this camp will not end this battle in death."
I glared at Hale. "You didn't tell me about this, Hale." We were now whispering among ourselves. I knew the others could hear but still it made me feel like it was a secret.
"Are you nervous?" Jace asked.
My glare snapped to him. "Never. Let's go."
Jace immediately threw a right hook to my face. That threw me off a little. I wasn't expecting him to throw the first punch being the champion. But then, when you are the champion you have the right to be a little cocky.
The next punch Jace threw I dodged. I ducked again and then swirled around with a nice kick to his chest. I was quite proud of myself for the hit I managed to get on him.
I managed to get in a few more punches before he kicked my feet out from under me and got on top of me. He looked down at me and I felt slightly helpless for a moment and then wrapped my body around his and flipped him over. We both went barrelling around the room throwing punches and when we stood again a few kicks were delivered to each of us.
Finally with a roundhouse kick to the diaphragm Jace fell to the ground and I placed my foot on his throat. This was symbolic to a win in a combat classroom.
"Nice," he whispered.
"Congratulations, Allison. You just took down the champion," Hale said, patting me on my shoulder.
I reached my hand down and helped Jace back up just to be polite. He took the gesture well and smiled at me.
"I'm very impressed."
