APRIL POV

As soon as Alexis was gone, I turned back to Chris.

"I-I don't understand this." he said angrily. I just shook my head.

"In my dream, when I talked to my dad right before Alexis was born, he said something like us has never existed before. No one has ever had enough love to stay behind for someone like I did for you." I explained.

"So he had no clue what the child could do..." Chris said, trailing off. I shook my head no and made him look at me.

"I think he had an idea. He suspected she would be different, and that's why he let me stay here longer." I said quietly. Chris wrapped his arms around me and held me.

"I think she can do other things too." I whispered. He looked at me in confusion.

"Like what?" he asked. I shrugged.

"I don't know. Anything..." I said, trailing off.

"You should go check on her." Chris said. I nodded and then turned around, heading home.

CHRIS POV

I couldn't believe that my daughter wasn't even completely human. And I was just figuring this out a week before April had to leave. Fuck.

As soon as I had enough money, I walked back into the warehouse and gave Antonio his share before going outside to my car. I started it up and headed home, trying to figure out how the hell Alexis could turn invisible.

When I got home, I walked inside and was instantly blinded by a mass of curly hair as someone threw their arms around me.

"Dad, I want you to quit. Please." Alexis whispered in my ear. I grabbed her waist and held her away slightly, staring at her. Her eyes were slightly red to show she had been crying.

"Alexis-"

"My mom's about to die, and I don't want my father to die too!' she yelled suddenly. I was shocked at how mad she was.

"You know if I try I'll be killed anyway." I said. She shook her head.

"We could run away and by the time they figured out you were gone they wouldn't be able to find you." she whispered, her tears falling again.

"They would find me at some point." I said. She reached out and took my hand.

"I could hide you." she whispered. I felt an odd tingling sensation, and then Alexis was gone. I looked down and saw that my own body was gone too. I yelped in shock, but I could still fell Alexis' hand in mine. I looked up and she reappeared.

"We wouldn't even have to hide. You could stay here." she pleaded, her tears streaming down her face. I pulled her into an embrace.

"Baby, I''m sorry." I whispered.

"Can you do it? Please?" she said softly. I sighed and looked up to see April at the top of the stairs. She nodded slowly, and I looked back at Alexis.

"I- okay." I said, dropping my head in defeat. She threw her arms around me and hugged me again.

"Thank you." she said. I sighed. I didn't know what I would do now. Find another job, I guess. But if Antonio came for me... of course he didn't know about April, and Alexis could protect herself with her gift, but what if she wasn't around when he came? What would happen? I should've thought of this sooner, but I had already told Alexis that I would quit. This was all so frustrating.

I took out the wad of money I had made and tossed it on the table. I hoped nothing would happen before next week, when April would be...gone.

ALEXIS POV

I was so happy that my father was finally going to quit that stupid drug dealing. It was pointless since he had already gotten more than enough money to make  a living. My mom seemed happy too, though she didn't voice it. He looked defeated, like we had won. I wore a smirk on my face for the rest of the day, but beneath the smirk I was terrified, sad, and lonely. I was about to lose my mother, I had to protect my father, and I had multiple gifts that I didn't understand. It was all so frustrating and confusing.

***

That night before I went to bed, I looked in the mirror and told myself that it wouldn't happen again. Not tonight, please not tonight. I always woke up before the end of the dream, but it still terrified me. I would always be scared of the day that I didn't wake up before the end. What would happen?

I sighed and climbed into bed, curling into a ball and squeezing my eyes shut, trying not to dream. But I failed. As soon as I drifted off to sleep, it started again. I was my mother, a younger version of her. It's like I was trapped inside her body, but I couldn't control it. I could only watch.

"Can they drive any slower?" her father roared, honking the horn again.

"Dad, calm down, we're almost there anyway." April said loudly, taking her earbuds out of her ears.

"I've been driving behind them for an hour! That's it, I'm going around." he said, swerving the car into the other lane.

"Dad watch out!" April screamed, but it was too late. The truck was speeding towards them, and I couldn't do anything. The younger version of my mother was screaming, and I was in her body, but I couldn't even lift a finger. I usually woke up at this part, but this time, I couldn't. I began to panic and my heart started to race. Right before the truck rammed into the car, I felt my mothers lips part, and she whispered four words.

"I love you Chris."

Then everything went black.
