Apocalypse

Once there was
The sunshine and the fresh earthy rain-smell
The glow of dawn and a smattering of stars
A peaceful lake, with animals and birds
A robin in a pine tree
Whispering, laughing trees
A silver moon over a shadowy world
The wind through the grass, making the shadows dance.

Now there is
The clouds and the thick choking smog
The glow of nuclear weapons and burning buildings
A war-torn city with the corpses of the wildlife
An orphaned child in a pile of rubble
Burnt stumps of trees
The shell explosions over a forgotten child's toy
The wind stirring up ugly, poisonous dust.
