~Chapter One~

Kanika awoke with a gasp. Why, of all times, did she have to be reliving those memories now?

After a week the two men hadn't returned, and the entire family was nervous. Even little Kyra could tell something was wrong.

"Where's Daddy?" She questioned the older half elf on their way into the village.

"I don't know, sweetheart. Hopefully he'll be home soon. Cairn, too." Kyra nodded, satisfied with the response. "Now hurry, you don't want to be late to Sadra's do you?" Kyra fiercely shook her head at he mention of her friend and sprinted ahead.

Kanika shook her head with a small laugh before her ears twitched. A second later a rock collided with the back of her head. The girl contained a snarl as she kept walking, hearing the taunting of others behind her.

"Filthy halfbreed!"

"You should be killed like an unwanted dog."

"That's insulting to dogs everywhere."

Their laughter burned in her ears as they trailed after her, shouting more insults. With every word her eyes turned a shade closer to a blood red.

"Damn mutt, aren't you going to fight back?"

Oh, she was tempted beyond belief to kill the three boys behind her.

"Too bad your father died, maybe now your whore of a mother can find an actual human."

Kanika whirled on the group. "My father is not dead, you insolent little-" Kanika cut off as Kyra ran back to her.

"Come on, Kanny!" Kyra begged. Kanika nodded, sending the group one last glare before following Kyra to her friends doorstep.

After sending her on her way Kanika purchased a loaf of bread before deciding to return home. On the edge of the village she noticed the boys behind her, but chose to ignore them. When she was to the treeline a blinding pain erupted from her shoulder. Kanika cried out in pain as the bread fell forgotten from her hand. She forced herself to rip out the arrow as tears filled her eyes. Keeping a hand on the wound she turned to face the boys.

"Hey, halfbreed. You aren't looking too well." Kanika growled, seeing the same three. One held the bow that had almost killed her, another arrow aimed at her face. The other two held swords, the leader's unsheathed.

"Damn you." She growled. The man with the arrow had her in his sights, and could easily kill her. Even with her advanced speed she could never make it. Instead, her injured arm reached to her belt, unsheathing a small throwing knife. Her movements were unseen by the others. She grabbed the knife by the handle, her other arm grabbing the blade and launching it towards the man with the bow. The knife sliced through the thread of the bow before passing his face harmlessly. Kanika immediately turned and sprinted into the trees, blindly running off the trail and deeper into the forest.

The men continued to shout behind her, but the sound of her heart thumping was the only thing she could hear clearly. Pants shook her body as she slowed to a stop, struggling to fill her lungs with air. Kanika fell to her knees and braced herself with her hands against the soft grass.

After a minute she moved to stand when she stumbled, falling against a patch of charred grass. Her mind worked quickly to try to figure out how there could be charred grass in the center of a forest. There were no signs of a camp nearby, and even the most skilled thief left something behind when they tried to cover their trail.

A low growl, quiet enough that if she were human she wouldn't have heard it, sounded behind her. Kanika whirled, seeing two green eyes watching from the trees. Darker green scales surrounded the eyes, extending to a neck, body, and wings. The long tail lashed silently, barbed spikes on the end barely avoiding trees. A row of razor sharp spikes began at the top of its neck, trailing down to the end of the tail. The creature placed one foot forward, white talons gripping the earth for traction.
