The Unknown Rebellion ~ Chapter Two
A sigh broke the silence that had fallen over the small house. Kanika sat with her elbows propped on the dark wooden table, head resting in her hands.
"What's wrong, Kan?" Kanika turned to see Kyra. The small bright haired child was now almost as tall as her stomach.
Four years had passed since the day her father died. Cairn seemed to withdraw into himself around Kanika, only speaking what was necessary. Her mother tried to be strong, but even Kyra could see the pain behind her eyes, and even Kyra could hear her sobbing at night.
Kanika assumed that most of Aiala's grief was because of what had happened years ago. There were no laws forbidding elves and humans from being together, only very uncommon. The only laws regarding such things were concerning the union of demons and any other creature. Demons, however, had perished as a species hundreds of years ago, alongside the dragons. Well, most dragons.
While it may be legal, any elf or human involved in such things were usually shunned, disowned in families and cast out. This is what had happened to Aiala and Neroka.
Shortly after the two fell in love Aiala's parents discovered it, telling Neroka's family immediately. Both were cast from their homes, travelling until they found the land they now own where they raised the three half elves and Caelum.
Kyra hadn't known Neroka too well, so it was easier for her to adjust. Still, she had to learn to live without a father.
As for Kanika. She swore off magic the day after her father's death. Magic and mythical creatures only seemed to bring chaos in her family. Thankfully, Cairn had told the others he was slain by the dragon, rather than telling about the madness.
Kanika couldn't bring herself to continue training with her father's sword. It felt... wrong... in a way. She still believed her father hadn't meant to give it to her. Why would he give his weapon to her when he could have given it to Cairn? Cairn was the one sibling who had been training with swords. Kanika had always used her bow unless it was absolutely necessary to use the blade.
But now, without magic, she may need the knowledge. This is why she trained, just with a different sword.
The ordinary steel was heavy in her hands, an uncomfortable grip. The slightly shorter blade was thicker than the elven blade, the hilt a plain dark brown leather.
Every day their family seemed to fall apart just a bit more.
Perhaps Cairn's prediction had come true after all.
"Kan?" The small voice repeating her name snapped Kanika from her thoughts. She jolted, her chair sliding back a few inches.
"Kyra?" Her hands were shaking in her lap, a fact the younger girl noticed.
"Kanika, what is it?" Kanika inhaled sharply as if a chill had passed through her spine. The child's pale green gaze was laced with concern. "What's wrong?" Kyra took one of Kanika's hands in her own. She gently brushed ther thumbs in circles on the back of Kanika's hand.
"I was just thinking. Nothing to be worried about." Kanika smiled weakly, lightly squeezing Kyra's hand before pulling her own from her sister's grasp. "I'm fine." She continued, more to herself than to her sister. Kyra nodded, obviously not fully believing the words.
Their mother, Aiala, spoke up from the other side of the table. Her eyes were distant, slightly puffy and showing her pain. "You girls should leave soon. Miknel won't be pleased if you are late again." Aiala forced a smile, not a feature on her face showing true joy in anything.
