A steady yet quickened heartbeat was all Kanika could hear as she ran, tears streaming down her cheeks. Auriox had awoken, trying to soothe his rider.

Kanika, however, ignored him to the best of her ability, throwing up a mental wall; the image of her sister. Her thoughts focused on that one topic to strengthen her defenses as the dragon buffer in annoyance, once again falling limp in Kanika's arms.

Night fell with alarming speed.

Wolves howled in the hills as Kanika fell to her knees, the severity of what had happened finally sinking in.

Ebony hair stuck to her skin with aj thin layer of sweat as she closed her eyes tight, clenching her fists. The night air began to cool, sending a chill up Kanika's spine.

Sitting in the wet grass she placed her back against a tree before trying to gain her bearings.

A wave of nausea washed over her as she looked across the small clearing to where she could still see it; still see the younger her driving the sword through the chest of her own father. Sobs raced past her lips as she buried her head in her knees.

'Kanika?' The silver dragon curled into her side, an attempt to keep her warm.

"What?" She sniffed as she raised her head.

'I am sorry. I did not anticipate what happened.' Her eyes narrowed dangerously as the dragon nudged her arm.

"Sorry? Sorry!? Because of your damned race half of my family is dead and our family is falling apart! Because of you I was sent from my home. My home! Cairn is always gone and Aiala is losing her mind! Who is supposed to take care of Kyra! She's alone, all because of you! I can't take this anymore!" Towards the end of her rant Kanika rose to her feet, gesturing wildly with her hands.

'I-' Kanika cut him off by raising a hand.

"No. Don't. Don't say anything. Just go." Her chest shook with sobs as she choked out the words, feeling her dragon's anger and disappointment through their link.

'I chose you as a rider because you were strong. Brave. Able to endure anything and keep going strong. I admired you, Kanika. I suppose I was wrong.' Before Kanika could respond the dragon vanished into the trees, leaving only his words behind.

The weight of the world suddenly seemed to rest on Kanika's shoulders as she collapsed to her knees.

"No." She scolded herself. "No. You can't do this to yourself. You need to get your weapons from the stable." Her tears slowed as she stood, swaying slightly. A brief fogginess passed through her mind before she continued walking.

After arriving at the land Aiala owned in less than ten minutes she watched carefully. Cairn was home, as was Kyra. The two were talking with Aiala in the kitchen, away from any windows near the area she was in.

Kanika breathed a sigh of relief before running forwards in a half crouch, pulling open the door to the wooden stable as quickly as possible, being greeted with a small squeak. The horses inside were asleep, except for Kahn. The black stallion tossed his mane with a neigh, greeting his rider.

"Hush, Kahn. We're leaving." Kanika placed her bow from the wall on her back, pausing as she reached for her silver blade. After a hesitation her eyes flicked to the right, and she placed the sheathed black sword on her hip. She exhaled shakily, placing the blanket and saddle bags on Kahn's back. Once finished stuffing the bags with the bread and apples in the stable she hoped onto Kahn, pulling the man lightly and tapping her heels on his side.

/Go./

--

Two days passed. Kanika had set up a small camp near the river where she could bathe and drink, and had gone through all of the food she brought.

Kahn neighed from the trees, sounding frenzied. Kanika cursed as she grabbed her bow, preparing an arrow.

The setting sun cast long shadows over her, and she mentally thanked the 16 gods for her advanced sight in the growing darkness. Leaves and twigs cracked lightly under her feet as the held elf sped through the trees.

She arrived in the clearing where Kahn was frantically rearing, brown eyes wide.

"Kahn!" Kanika yelled, running forward. At her approach the horse noticeably calmed, snorting occasionally.

Kanika soothed the horse to the best of her ability, glancing around and trying to figure out what had scared him.

A low growl sounded, and it only took a moment before her blood ran cold and her eyes widened, meeting the gaze of the glowing green orbs from the trees.
