My Princess

I sit, alone, inside an empty citadel,
A prince without a princess, stuck inside a mental hell.
Loneliness creeps upon my doorstep and racks upon my door,
Overcome with longing, I fall, weary, to the floor.
I sit and count the miles between you and I,
Waiting for your response, trying not to die.
If I thought I could live without you, I wouldn't waste my time,
To say that I don't love you would be a heinous crime.

So, I sit, alone, inside an empty citadel,
A prince without a princess, stuck inside a prison cell.
You're falling, I see, so I thrust out my hand,
These bars hold me captive, I'm only half a man.
I can't save you from the darkness of your hurt and lonely soul,
I can only heal your sadness, and hold you 'til we're old.
I can kiss your boo-boos, and look you in the eyes,
Waiting for your response, trying not to die.

The one person whose opinion mattered,
Has had their life taken, their fragile spirit shattered.
My one, my only, my soul-mate is gone forever,
I couldn't save your life through a final, desperate endeavor.
I overcame my longing, long enough to see you die,
Waiting for your response, trying not to cry.
Loneliness creeps through my door's crack and spills upon my floor,
As a bright red stream of blood spatters upon my door.

I wanted you, as my princess, to warm my frozen heart,
To give me the life I'd never had, an unsullied, fresh start.
If you'll forever love me, I'll protect you from all harm,
Your knight in shining armor, I'll gladly take up arms.
Blood of your blood, I'll die when you die,
Infinitely sensitive, I'll cry when you cry.
We'll live together forever, wherever we may be,
I, as your prince, you, as my princess, for all eternity.
