Chapter 5
Gasps echo around me.
"What are you talking about? I think we'd know if we were spies," Sky laughs.
"Well let me rephraze," Alyssa replies "you are all decendants of families of spies. We are just the school that trains the child prodigies."
A man walks up to the podium and glances around at all of us, "Hello, I am Nathaniel and I will be one of your many mentors this year. You are all of different potential. You will work to live up to your family name, and your heritage is what will give you your special ability."
"I know this is all confusing right now, but we have many classes that will teach you all the content you need to know before you are put into the real world! Your schedules are on your beds, please check them when you get back to the room." Alyssa calls out like she has said it many times before, "But first- this isnt going to be easy, you are all here because your blood ensures your positions, but this isnt a game! If you are as good as your family name should say, then you should be able to make your own way into SASA."
Alyssa walks gingerly to the centre of the stage and pulls on a rope that unreels a banner with a rank list.
"There is a test coming up where you must prove yourselves. I advise you all to begin training and take it seriously, we cannot ensure your safety in the real world." Alyssa's voice beams, full of power.
And then, all hell breaks loose.
Girls and boys break out into loud chatter, some people stand shocked, others laugh in disbelief.
"QUIET!" Nathaniel demands.
Silence overtakes the room.
"It is tradition each year for one student of the freshman year to be somewhat of a leader. Family name only means so much. You will all be ranked depending on your abilities in study, fieldwork, tech classes and special ability classes, which we call SAC. If you are number 1, you will be class president, this comes along with certain responsibilities, and you will be spokesperson for interacting with the middle and senior classes, as well as having major jobs in our important real life fieldwork classes. This is a dangerous job, and can only be achieved through hard work and skill. Each year, many training spies drop out or are forced to leave, only the best of the best can make it into the real world." Nathaniel stay quiet for a few moments as this sinks in. "Your ranking is important, stay in the top 40 out of 100 freshman and you will make it into the middle years, stay in the top 25 in the middle years and you will make it into senior years, and only 15 students will graduate from the senior years into the real world."
Alyssa steps back in, "now all of you, back to your rooms, call your loved ones. Plan your upcoming schedules, and prepare yourself for hardwork. Tonight you will have dinner with the rest of the academy and your classes will begin tomorrow. I wish you all good luck, and please be aware of the risks to your lives before you do anything stupid these following 3 years."
Alyssa and Nathaniel exit the room, leaving silence behind them.
"What just happened?" I turn around and look at my roommates.
"Rankings? I don't know how I will get ranked high enough, I'm not spy material, I won't beat all these people!" Arya rambled.
Isla and Maya walk over to her and comfort her, "It's okay, we're small and not that good at sport at all, but we were all put in a dorm room together so we will help each other out with what we arent good at."
"I can help you all with sport, thats always been my thing in high school." I say with a reassuring smile.
"Maya and I are silent and good at sneaking when we need to be, if that helps.." Isla trails off.
"What about you Sky? Anything you are particularly good at?" I ask.
"I'm good with technology." Sky spoke slowly.
"Perfect! And everyone needs a beautiful distraction Arya, so if you dont have something you are already good at then you can use those looks to your advantage!" I laugh jokingly at her.
She laughs lightly, "I have a really good memory, everything I read and learn I remember forever."
"That's amazing!"
I take the opportunity to look around the room at the other novices in our class. There were some scared and cowering and others who looked like they had been trained for this their whole lives.
Things were about to get tough it seemed.
"Come on, lets go back to the room girls, we have to work out our schedules and call our families. Things'll be just fine, I'm sure." I said warmly.
God I hope I can keep this promise.
