"WE SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAVE ADOPTED YOU! ALL YOU'VE DONE IS BEEN A PROBLEM!" My "mum" screamed at me...for the third time.
"Elizabeth, there is no need for that." My adopted father said, trying to calm Ms.Darling down.
"Don't worry, by tomorrow, I won't be your problem anymore." I whispered, walking up the stairs to my room.
I closed the door and ran to my closet, a weird place to have a "secret hideout" but in the corner of the walk-in, I had a pile of books. Fairy tales. Not the bippity-boppity you look like a princess crap, but the originals, written by The Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Anderson. When I was frustrated or sad I would curl up with my baby blanket and read a few stories. Which, didn't exactly work anymore, because I was 5 foot 5, and I could use my little pink blanket as a leg warmer.
I grabbed my book bag and dumped all the textbooks out, it's not like I would need them where I was going. I packed clothes, brushes, blankets, and my storybooks then zipped it close as I heard my bedroom door knob turn. I ran to my bed and flew into it, then covered myself up as Mr.Darling walked in.
I watched as he walked across the room to turn of my lamp. Before he left he kissed my forehead and said, "Please excuse Elizabeth, she hasn't been the same since..."
I sighed. "Wendy left. I know."
"Yes." He nodded. "Do not take what she says personally Olivia-Grace, she means well."
I nodded and closed my eyes. I waited until I heard my bedroom door close to open my eyes. Careful not to make a sound, I stepped out of bed and tip-toed to my closet to grab my bag. I quickly ran over to my bed and grabbed a hammer out from under my mattress. Elizabeth Darling was a paranoid weirdo, she nailed every single window in the house shut, she had five locks on each door. So, to get out unnoticed, I had to open the window and climb down the vines that snaked up the brick wall.
I pried the window open and felt the cool night air; before I climbed out I whispered to myself, "I'm sorry Dad." And swung my legs over the side.
Climbing down from a second story window on a London winter night with only vines to hold you up is not a smart or safe idea. For one, after a while of your knuckles scraping the brick, they get bloody and cold. And two, with one wrong move you could end up on the hard pavement with a broken bone. I stopped to catch my breath, climbing down vines is a lot harder than it would seem. As I was about to move my foot to the next foothold, my left leg was suddenly suspended in the open air.
I gasped and put my toes on the brick wall, trying to find somewhere to put my foot. As I looked around I felt the vines my hands were holding onto, breaking away.
I looked up and whispered, "No bloody way." The window sill was to far for me to reach, but I was still too high that if I fell I would break my leg. I searched for a way up but I was too late, my hands slipped and I fell. I screamed, not caring that they probably heard me. But, before I hit the ground something knocked me sideways and grabbed my hand. I gasped and steadied my breathing.
"Wait..." I looked up and my mouth fell open. Holding me by the hand was a shadow, when it looked at me I saw it's glowing eyes. It took my mind a moment to process that I was being carried by a flying shadow with glowing eyes to god knows where.
"AHHHHHHHHHH." I screamed at the top of my lungs. I tried to wiggle out of it's reach but the shadow's grip was too strong. I looked down and saw the London streets speeding past, then I thought, 'Couldn't this be a good thing? Wherever this thing is taking me, Ms.Darling won't be there. And I can find somewhere to live until they find me again.'
I was snapped from my thoughts when I realized the air was getting thinner. The shadow was flying higher and higher and didn't seem like it was going to stop. My head started aching and my lungs hurt, my vision blurred as I passed over the ocean. Suddenly, everything went black.
