The girls all sat around Lola as Mary stood before her. Each one had grief stricken faces.
"There was nothing I could do," Mary said, quietly.
"I was too late," she felt tears coming at the pain her dear friend felt.
Lola's face scrunched up.
"He wasn't a traitor!" Mary watched as Lola looked around frantically with tear marks streaking her face."They said he was involved in an English plot," Mary said, trying not to let her emotions control her.
"I don't know who to believe."
Lola glared at Mary and stood up.
"You're the reason he's dead!"Shock and betrayal overcame Mary and she stepped back, hurt.
"Anyone who's close to you lives in constant danger!"
The others watched from where they were sitting as Lola hurt Mary with each word.
"We're disposable! All of us!" Lola said, angrily.
Mary shook her head quickly.
"No, you're not. I need you!"
She looked down in despair."You're my friends!"
Lola glared. "Kenna is my friend," she glanced down at Kenna who looked away.
"Greer and Hayleigh are my friends," she said.
Greer and Hayleigh looked away with pained countenances.
"You are my Queen and we are your subjects. We're here in service to you. Whatever that means. Whatever that costs us."
Mary couldn't believe how they all hated her. Grief racked her body. Guiltiness filled her.
"I will protect you," she said weakly, hoping they'd believe her.
Lola stared at her angrily, "You can't even protect yourself."
"I'll do better," Mary cried.
"I promise."
The others just stared at her as Lola glared and sat down.
Mary looked on with pain in her heart.
She had no one.
Suddenly Lola let out a sob and all the others were on her comfortingly as Mary stood to the side, watching her ladies abandon her.
She herself held in her tears and walked out the room.

When she was outside the door, she breathed in and out, trying to forget the past events.
Suddenly, she heard whines.
She looked up and gasped.
"Sterling!" Mary's tears dried as she smiled gratefully at Bash.
"Oh, you've found him!"
She ran to her dog and knelt, running his warm fur.
"Oh Sterling, what did I do?" she asked before looking up at Bash.
"I'm sorry," she said and her tears began to leak through her eyes.
"It's just been a long day."
Bash smiled, gently. "I know."
Mary sighed. "It's so much harder than I thought it would be."
Bash looked down at her, pitiful.
"You're not alone her."
