3.9.2012.
Ride to Joe's was too short and I didn't have to time to mentally prepare myself for what is about to happen. I, Sophie Kidd, will be sitting at a restaurant where most of the school comes with The Populars. I could already hear whispers that will follow me through hallways tomorrow.
How did this even happen? I only parked next to Meg Richards. That's it.
I was the last to come (again) so I've parked nearest to the entrance. It wasn't until I got out of the car that I've realized I parked next to Meg Richards. I took a deep breath and entered Joe's.
The Populars were sitting at their usual table- fourth one on the left, next to a window.
"Sorry, I'm late. I accidentally took the wrong turn." I lied. I actually stayed in the school parking lot for ten minutes trying not to hyperventilate.
"It's cool. Happens to everyone." Lucas said. His arm was wrapped around Leah's waist and I couldn't deny they looked cute together.
"You would know that." John said to him laughing. "One time, he was coming to my house but he missed my house number and ended up knocking and yelling on Mrs. Lockwood door." I couldn't help but laugh imagining the look on Mrs. Lockwood's face when she opened the door.
Lucas was glaring at John but after replaying the accident in his head joined in the laughter.
The waiter came and took my order. Before he left he winked at me and I blushed looking away.
"That guy was totally hitting on you." Leah exclaimed. I blushed harder.
"Oh, he is cute!" Meg Richards remarked. "I bet he's already in college."
"Just your type." Eric teased.
"College guys, huh?" I spoke for the first time since sitting down.
"With years, come experience." Meg Richards casually said.
I nodded and began to think. She was nothing like people said. Meg Richards isn't a snobby bitch but a normal, nice girl who just happens to be extremely popular. Just because her dad owned half of San Francisco and people always said her full name didn't mean she should be judged. I thought about Paul saying that her and I will become friends. After my realization about her that might happen, you know if I become less socially awkward.
I observed others as well.
Louise was the only one from the group I always thought was nice. Maybe because I've herd that her family has financial problems and her older sister is nice.
Lucas was a nerd, it was really easy to tell because of his glasses and the way his eyes light up every time someone mentions a school assignment or an old copy of Marvel comics. In most schools he would be made fun of but in Churchill High he was the most popular guy in school (alongside Eric).
Leah is known as the red head captain of the cheerleaders. For a while there was a rumor that Meg Richards was supposed to get that spot but Leah bribed other girls on the team to vote for her. But looking at her with Lucas I highly doubt she could do something like that.
And that leaves us with Eric Johnson. Ah yes, the dreamiest guy in San Francisco. I am not exaggerating, with his tall and muscular build, raven, always messy hair and emerald eyes he could easily be a world famous super model. He's a junior and he has been voted student body president two times (and will be again this year). A lot of rumors are circulating about him sleeping with a lot of girls, older girls. Is it true? I don't know. Nobody does, really.
"Sophie, Sophie!" Meg Richards snapped me out of my thoughts.'
"Huh? Sorry, I zoned out." I could feel my cheeks blushing. "What did you say?"
"I asked are you going to Leah's party this Saturday."
I had to stop myself from laughing at her. Why on earth would I go to Leah's party. I'm not even invited.
"I, I didn't know I was invited." I stuttered. I was doing such a good job at being cool.
"Of course you are." Leah smiled. "So, you will come?"
"I have to ask my mother first." as soon as those words escaped my mouth I wanted to slap myself. How could I say that in front of them. Now they will think I'm a complete loser.
Thank god, they didn't comment on that and just switched the topic.
I started to relax a bit and I would say something from time to time. Time flew by and when I looked at my phone I've noticed it's seven already. I had two missed calls from mother. Crap!
"I have to go." I said.
They all said goodbye except Louise. She was very quiet today.
"See you tomorrow Kidd." Eric whispered in my ear before I left.
After I made a first turn around the corner and was sure that no one would see me I stopped the car and I got out. I needed air. I had to wrap my mind around everything that happened today.
My breathing picked up as I was replaying today in my head. How is ti possible that everyone including The Populars noticed me just because I parked next to Meg Richards.
But the most shocking thing is that they were nice to me. Meg Richards didn't try to destroy me because I parked next to her, she seemed impressed and so did everyone else. They didn't look at me like I'm a freak because of my social awkwardness like most people in the school did.
This goes against every movie and everything I've been told about popular group in high school.
After I got my breathing under control, I got back in my Cadillac and drove straight home.
Time to face my overly excited mother. Oh, joy!
