"What in the hell were you two thinking!" Fury yelled out, slamming his hands onto the table in front of us.
We had just come back from searching for Bucky. I made the call to come back when Rogers decided to chase after what I still believe to be nothing. Although I wasn't about to say that's what actually happened.
"We thought we would take a look around on the rooftops." I said.
"And run practically a mile in the opposite direction from what we designated." Fury bluntly roared. "We tracked both of you the whole way."
I had almost forgotten they monitored us during this mission. We had even gone over a specific grid to follow the morning before; making sure we covered the most ground efficiently.
I watched as Rogers got up from were he was sitting. "It wasn't that."
I looked over at him in a calm but uncertain manner. What was he doing?
"I saw him." He said slowly.
"You mean to tell me that you saw Barnes?" Fury was now looking a little more calm.
"Yes and no." I replied coldly, shooting Rogers a confident glare.
Rogers shot me a glance. "I saw him."
"Why didn't you two say anything before now?" Fury questioned.
"Well, I'm not sure what we saw was him." I chimed in. I could tell Rogers was becoming irritated by my opposition.
I watched as Fury studied us both. He seemed to be examining us. It must have been obvious that we weren't seeing eye to eye. I know that I didn't see anything, but Rogers thought otherwise.
"It seems you two can't agree on what happened today. Until you both decide to tell me, I'm calling the mission off for the time being."
"Sir, I-"
"That's an order." Fury said cutting off Rogers as he headed for the door. "I can't have you both arguing."
The room went silent after Fury left. I looked over at Rogers stranded at the opposite side of the room. His gaze was steady.
"What are you doing?" He questioned.
"Common, you and I both know there wasn't anything there."
"I know what I saw." He paused, making his way over to me. "I tried to convince myself that I hadn't seen him on the way back, but I know he was there."
"Rogers, I followed you the whole time! There was no one but us." I shifted in my chair.
"I can't believe that." He said looking toward his shield. His eyes lighting up with its vibrant colors.
"Believe what you want. I'm not going to let my emotions get in the way of this mission." I looked up at his tall figure. His blue eyes looking into mine.
"It's my fault he was made into that." He replied.
"What? A monster. Hydra did that, not you. Besides he's not the only one you need to worry about." I looked down at my hands at the last of my words.
"You're not a monster." He said calmly. "I've seen what that is."
"Maybe so. Even though I can't tell you what you want to hear. It's just not that simple. You seem to be having problems with what has happened. Maybe you should get that straightened out sooner than later." I said getting up out of my chair.
"Griffin." I heard him call. "Wait."
I turned around. He grabbed my arm. His hand was strong but gentle.
"You can't tell anyone. I have to figure this out on my own." He said.
"No you don't, Rogers." I said taking his hand away from my arm. "Trust me, you don't want to do things alone."
I watched a uncertain smile come to his face. "Somehow I think that has more meaning for you than it does me."
"Lets just say things haven't been easy for someone like me." I replied.
"I'm not sure it's ever easy." He stated.
"Rogers?" I questioned before leaving for the cold metal door that opened to the hallway.
"Yeah." He replied picking up his shield.
"I'm not sure what happened to you out there, but you have to figure it out." I replied. I could feel myself reverting back to my distant attitude.
"I know." I heard him say as I went out the door.
I walked slowly down the hallway that lead to my room. I kept my sword close to my side. Was I becoming to close to this mission? Was I getting to close to Rogers?
I wanted to assist him in this mission. I wanted to be there for him. I was trained to not show human emotion. But something strange was happening.
I was becoming something different. A part of me didn't want this mission to ever come to a end. Selfishly I wanted to be by his side at all cost.
When I made it to my room I fell onto my bed. "Maybe I should reevaluate my mission?" I thought out loud.
"And what would that be?" I heard a voice from outside my door speak up.
I quietly got up and walked to the door. I looked out the small peephole in the door to see who it was.
I opened it to see the familiar face of my mentor.
"Coulson?" I questioned.
"Fury sent me here to talk to you."
"Of course." I replied dryly as I let him into my room.
I shut the door once he was in.
I watched as he walked over to a chair in the dark corner of the room.
"So." He pondered. "I need a bit of information from you."
"What is it you want to know?" I calmly replied.
"What are your priorities concerning Steve Rogers?"
I waited in dead silence. What was he getting at?
