"Griffin!" Her name rolled of my tongue. "Victoria!" I called out as I looked at her in my arms.
She wasn't moving. The gash on her head had stopped bleeding, but she hadn't regained consciousness. I swiftly looked down the hallway in both directions as I held her.
Zero had vanished again after our fight. Although I knew it was a matter of time before he returned.
"Rogers?" I heard her finally whisper, bringing my gaze back to her. Her eyes softly opened.
I pushed her hair away from her face. Her expression changing into fear. I had never seen her express such a emotion until now.
"He's one of them." She began to sit up as she grabbed her forehead. "Zero's an immortal." She said with a gasp of air.
A shiver went up my spine. Now we knew we couldn't kill him. How would we get pass this? "How do you know?" I questioned.
"He told me." She paused. "He did it to threaten me. He wanted us to know."
"Know what?" I could hear Fury's stern voice call in the background.
We both turned to see that he was making his way towards us. I took in a breath of air before he stopped in front of us both. I slowly got to my feet, helping Griffin up as well.
"You both look like you've been through hell and back." Fury said in a grizzled tone.
Both Griffin and I exchanged glances. I knew what was about to come. After all it was the only way to keep the information safe no matter how much I might protest it.
Without a word Fury shifted his weight as he tilted his head. "He's back, isn't he?"
I slowly nodded my head, but before I could speak Griffin spoke before me.
"Yes." She paused. "He was going to take me with him before Rogers stopped him." She looked down at the ground. "He's one of them."
"Griffin, no." I whispered.
"Let me tell him, Steve." She replied.
Fury stood in the silence for a moment. "One of you need to talk." He paused. "What's going on."
"Zero is the first experiment implemented by Hydra." She looked over at Fury. "The information on the microchip contains a formula for human experimentation, to make immortals." He eyes darted away some. "He happens to be their first."
"And how do you know this?" Fury questioned. "Why didn't Banner say anything before I left?"
"He didn't get all the information from the microchip." I spoke up. "It was my idea."
Griffin shot me a glance. I was prepared to take the blame.
"I wanted to buy her more time." I continued. "I knew you would keep her locked away in some room if you found out."
"You're right." Fury took a few steps back. "We have no other choice now." He looked over at Griffin. "You'll have to stay in quarantine until we figure something out. There's a room in the building that won't allow anything unwanted to enter. Of course we can't let anyone in either." He turned to look at me.
"So you really are just going to lock her way?" I questioned.
"It's not a matter of if I'm going to, I will. I'm left with no other choice" Fury paused. "We can't let Hydra get this information, no matter the cost."
"So, you've already decided it's best for her to rot in a cell?" I looked him in the eye.
"Unfortunately if that's what it takes." Fury gave me a fierce glance. " That's an order, Rogers. I expect you to follow it. From this day on, until we find a solution, you will not have any contact with Victoria Griffin." Fury stepped closer. "Is that clear."
"No." I stepped closer. "I can't-"
"Rogers." Griffin spoke up. "It's okay." She looked over at Fury. "I'll go."
"Griffin." I could feel my tone change. I would only be able to see her from a distance. She wouldn't be by my side. She wouldn't be my assistant. It may take months before they find a solution or they may never find one. They valued her life enough not risk taking out the microchip and yet, they didn't mind if she stayed in a cell for the rest of her days. She would be a prisoner.
"It's ok Rogers." Her voice broke my thoughts. "Besides, I'll still be here."
"But you won't Griffin. No one will be allowed to get close to you." I looked down at the ground. "They'll keep you in there for however long it takes."
"I'm prepared for that." She looked up. Her soft eyes meeting mine. "Are you?" She turned to look at Fury. "Lead the way."
I grabbed out at her hair as she passed by me. Her black locks brushing past my fingertips. She would be in a secure room. More than likely guarded day and night. How was I going to live with that?
"You're doing the right thing." Fury called over his shoulder. Griffin took her place at his side. "Keep your eyes open Steve. I fear this is only the beginning." He turned to look at Griffin. "Let's go."
I watched as she nodded her head in agreement. She looked uncertain, scared, and somehow lonely. She had always been alone in this world. Somehow I wanted to fix it. I wanted to be there for her.
All I knew, was somehow, I had to get to her. Fury wouldn't allow it. No one would. That much I knew. I had to accept the fact that this was reality. I knew this was coming.
I looked down at the cold floor. Her sweet scent still looming around me as I watched them walk down the hallway. Armed guards escorting them as they began to turn the corner.
I knew the exact location. She would be held in a room under the compound. No one in, no one out. The room was designed to keep anything out. Even immortals that can suddenly appear from thin air.
It wasn't going to be easy. But I knew I would have to see her again, even if it was the last thing I did. She had to know. I had to tell her the truth.
