"I'm not sure I can take it out." I could hear Banners voice just behind me.
I turned around to see Griffin laying flat on her stomach as they ran a few test.
"And why is that?" Fury finally replied.
Banner walked around a few steps before coming to a holographic screen. No less one of Starks inventions. I watched as he lifted his hand to the screen at the image of an X-ray. He shifted his glasses some before turning back around.
"You see, the microchip is just below her skull at the back of the neck. If we remove it she could be paralyzed or worse." Banner darted his gaze from me back to Fury.
"So you're saying it could kill me?" I turned to see Griffin now sitting up on the metal table.
"It's a possibility." Banner responded.
"Is there anyway to retrieve the information from the microchip without taking it out?" Fury questioned.
"Stark might have a way to get to it. I think it's best we contact him." Banner replied.
"Very well." Fury shook his head as he walked out of the room.
"Tell me-" Banner turned around to face Griffin. "-how is it that it even got there in the first place?"
I watched as Griffin got up from the table. "Well the memory I had was that of my father. I found out just recently he had joined Hydra before his death. I believe he put it there. I guess the experience was traumatic enough that I couldn't remember it until now."
"So your father implanted it?" Banner questioned out loud. "He must have had a reason to hide it from Hydra all these years."
Griffin shook her head in agreement. "I would like to think that." I could see her expression becoming slightly worried.
"If you'll excuse us, I think Griffin and I will take a short walk. We won't be gone long." I finally felt the need to intervene. I could tell all of this was getting to her.
She glanced up at me in a state of confusion at first before walking toward me next to the door.
"What's going on?" She whispered as she took a few steps forward.
"Nothing. I just think you need time to process everything. I could tell you were getting worried." I grabbed her arm as we walked out the door.
"Rogers, I'm fine." She said coldly. "I can handle it."
"I've never doubted that." I replied. "We'll just wait in the hallway until Fury comes back with word from Stark."
"I see." She spoke up. "You're the one really worried."
"What?" I questioned.
"You're worried. Rogers, you didn't even say a word back there when they were talking about the situation. You barely wanted to look at the screen that had my X-rays on it." She tilted her head in my direction. "You can't worry about me."
I looked over at her. How could I not worry about her? "I do." I replied. "You heard them back there. If we remove it it could leave you paralyzed or... It could kill you."
"Then pray Stark can get the information. Either way I'd rather die at the hands of your team and know it will be with you, than the microchip fall into the wrong hands." She was expressionless at her words. "I know, whatever is on it, my father wanted to make sure no one found out. After all what better place to keep the secret than his own daughter."
I diverted my gaze to the wall behind her. Maybe it was true. Maybe the information was more valuable than her life. But I didn't believe that. "You're wrong." I paused. "Whatever information that microchip contains is not worth your life."
"I fear it will be." She looked in the opposite direction. "This was my fear all along."
"What do you mean?" I questioned.
She looked back at me. Her eyes crystal clear. "That you would get too close and that your judgement would be clouded by your emotions. I knew it would come to this."
I looked down. "Are you saying that none of this, what you and I feel, is worth it?"
"I'm saying that we aren't in a position to let this escalate any further. I'm you're assistant and I will be as long as I'm required to. But that's all I'll be." She placed her hand on my face. Her warm fingers running over my lips. "I won't forget it."
"Neither will I." I felt as if my heart was being pulled out. The same feeling I had when I left Peggy to save the world from Hydra's plan.
"We have a world to protect after all." She said in a faint smile.
I nodded my head in agreement. "Hasn't it always been that way?" My thoughts went back to the time before things changed. Before I became Captain America. After all I had always felt like saving the world was the only option.
I watched her shift away from me. This time she didn't flash a smile. She didn't look my way. Was she possibly feeling the same? I should have listened to her before it came to this.
"Well I'm going back. I'm sure it won't be long before we have word on Starks plan." She turned around. "Fury won't let him take too long after all."
I watched her walk away, back down the hallway. Somehow it always seemed to come to this. Destiny? Mine was a name change and a shield. Her's was to carry secret information and be a valued spy. I wanted to change it. Maybe just for a moment the world could wait.
Once she was out of sight, I began to walk in the same direction as she had gone. Before I came to the door I could hear Banner and Griffin chatting. I looked back down the hallway. I could see Fury walking his way back down.
Something was off. He didn't seem like his usual self. I knew whatever he was going to say, I had to prepare myself to handle it.
My thoughts came back to the room next to me. I looked in the doorway. I could see Griffin sitting down back on the metal table from before. She had changed her expression. Somehow she was smiling.
I was caught between how I felt and what was the reasonable thing to do.
How could I move on?
