"As you may know, the government keeps many secrets from us civilians." Mario said. "One of these secrets, the most well kept, was a bio-weapon known as the Z-virus. It took years to create and was unstable since day 1."
"How do you know all of this?" I asked. I was desperate for answers to the million questions that were running inside my mind.
"I was a scientist at the CDC, you see." He looked down regretfully. "I was the lead scientist on this particular project. As you can see, it was a stupid idea and now the whole country is in widespread chaos. All because I accepted the job." I looked at him with disgust. How could he have done something like this? Maybe he was forced to. Maybe he was threatened. Either way, I had no right to judge him. I quickly dismissed the thought and turned my attention back to him.
"Let me show you around amigo!" He enthusiastically said. He started walking through the courtyard and stopped when a lady stood in front of him. She held a clipboard firmly in her hand.
"Oh. This is Ella. She is the makeshift doctor. She will check you for wounds and bites. By the way, if you have a bite, you are as good as dead, so watch out." Ella stared at me with cold eyes.
"And you are?" She asked.
"My name is Caden. Mario rescued me from one of those zombie things." I replied.
"Zombies is just fine" Ella said. She turned around and walked off. Mario resumed walking and introduced me to everyone. There was Jim the mechanic, Anatoly the weapons expert, and Sarah, the sniper. Mario gestured to Sara to open the gates, and we walked out. In the distance I could see the city- or what was left of it.
"Looks like government secrets are secrets no more!" Anatoly said as he walked up behind us. "Here is your gun, Caden. Take it, you will need it" He handed me the revolver which was polished, cleaned, and reloaded.
"Thank you." I said. I looked off into the distance when all of a sudden, 6 military jets flew over the city. They started dropping bombs and I could see the explosions rise high as women and children screamed and cried. Then a thought came to my head. What had happened to my mother?
