Chapter 1: The Beginning

It all started when we were in Kindergarten. I met my current best guy friend, Jake. He was outgoing, adventurous, funny, caring and did I mention cute? My name is Nicole. Jake and I are like two peas in a pod, people even thought we were brother and sister by the amount of time we spend together. There is never a moment he isn't at my side. Okay, well besides sleeping and going to the bathroom. Every day we spend time together whether it is doing homework, telling each other crazy stories or watching a movie. We have shared so many good memories with each other in the past nine years. Honestly, they have been the best years of my life. He is easy to talk to and I feel comfortable being able to act weird and crazy around him.

I even remember back when we were kids we would come home from school and go to his house where we would eat our special snack. We both loved the same kinds of foods and so we created a special snack just for that reason. It was Nutella with pretzels.  While you may think it is such a boring snack, Jake always had something else in a mind. By this I mean we would always have a nutella fight in his kitchen. Yes, of course we would always clean up before his parents came home from work.

Back to reality, today is the last day of 8th grade and I can't wait to see what exciting things are going to happen today! I get up out of bed and hurry to get dressed. I quickly call Jake. Like always, he doesn't answer the first time you call until you leave a voice mail, so I did. I yelled into my iPhone and said, "Wake up Jakeyyy. Last day of eighth grade! Hurry up, get ready and meet at my house in 30 minutes!" Oh yeah, we gave each other nicknames back in elementary. His is Jakey and mine is Nikki.

It is almost time to drive to school when I hear the doorbell ring. I secretly said yes in my head because I had the cutest outfit on today. I mean, c'mon it's the last day being in middle school. Who wouldn't dress nice? I opened the door with a big grin on my face only for it to slowly go away after I looked head to toe at what Jake was wearing.

I responded nicely to Jake and said, "Nice outfit!"

"Thanks. You look good. Is that perfume? Smells nice." Jake says.

"Yeah, I'm trying something new. It's almost summer anyways."

"We should probably get going, we don't want to be late." Jake says

            "Mom let's go."

I sit in the back of my mom's car with Jake. He always knows how to start a conversation right, unlike me who sometimes stumbles upon my words due to my mom being in the car. We started talking about what our plans are for after school and how we are going to make this summer the best one yet. Finally, we arrived at school. I waved goodbye to my mom as she said the same line as she always does, "Have a good day at school, honey."

Jake and I walked side by side together to our first class. I got really lucky this year, lucky enough that I got to have all my academic classes with him including lunch. How awesome is that? It was even better that he always got to sit next to me in each of those classes. By the time I knew it, it was time to go home. The bell rang and I waved goodbye telling my friends to make sure we keep in touch over the summer. I walked out of my class with the memories of this year playing inside my head. I waited for Jake at our secret spot which was our favorite tree beside the school building. We would always come and eat lunch under this tree every day. That is how special it was to us.

I looked at my watch wondering what is taking him so long? In the distance I saw him running towards me and panting as he tried to explain why he was late. I let him know it was fine and that there was no need to explain. He smiled and put his arm around my shoulder as we walked to his house.

When we get to his house we make cupcakes instead of eating or special snack. We turn up the volume on the radio and start dancing and singing along to the music. I have to say, watching Jake sing and dance is pretty hilarious. He likes to belt out the notes a lot and pretend he is a rock star. The music quieted down for a little and out of nowhere he came and ticked me from behind. I couldn't stop laughing as I was trying to get away. I was so ticklish and he knew all of my tickle spots. After a little we finally calmed ourselves down but then just had to burst out into laughter. A typical friendship quality of ours.

After a second or two of silence he happily says, "Nikki, do you want to stay the night?"

"Of course! Let me text my mom and ask!"

Jake had this big grin on his face as he awaited an answer. One minute later we heard a ding on my phone, sure enough my mom said yes.

"Awesome! How about I walk you home so you can go get your stuff?" Jake said

            "Sure, that would be great."

On the way to my house which was at the end of his street we talked about all of the fun things we were going to do tonight since it was the first official night of summer. He walked me to my doorstep, gave me a hug goodbye then said "Just come over when you are ready."

"Okay I will. See you soon Jake!" I closed my front door and ran upstairs to get my stuff as fast as I could. I have a feeling this is going to be the best night ever!
