Chapter Five

Garroth POV:

What the nether is going on?

I feel an urge to run off after her, when she storms past me but first Laurance.

"Of course. You just had to swoop in." He snaps at me.

"Laurance, what in Irene is going on?" I snap back.

He shakes his head.

"Laurance??? What is with you? I stepped in because I was worried you were making her feel uncomfortable." I state with an authoritative tone.

"Sorry Prince Charming. I forgot you save all the girls round here from being cared about by me." He lashes at me and storms off in the opposite direction to Makoto.

I shake my head in confusion and run after Makoto. She pins me against a tree when I grab her wrist. I hear her curse under her breath.

"Force of habit, sorry." She mutters pulling back away from me.

"I should've given you a heads up. It's my fault." I say with a smile.

She lets out a heavy sigh which I was ready to question when Aphmau came walking up to us.

"You must be Makoto! I have heard so much about you!" She said to Makoto.

"I was just escorting her to you, Lady Aphmau." I say with a serious expression.

"That's very kind of you Garroth but I'm sure, after seeing her throw you against a tree, that she's capable of being on her own." Aphmau chuckles.

I feel heat rise to my cheeks.

"I-I.. About that.. I-I wasn't a-attacking him.. I.. H-he scared m-me... He c-came.. U-up behind me.. And.. I-I wasn't ready and.. From being a g-guard and ex s-s-shadow knight it becomes a-a k-kind of reflex." She stutters, looking slightly flustered. She looks so cute like this. Her angelic voice making her even more appealing..

"You're an ex Shadow Knight?" Aphmau asks.

"I.. Uh... Yeah." She again stutters, "It really.. I-Isn't s-some-something that.. I w-want to discuss r-right now." She adds shyly.

What the nether is the girl doing to me?

"It's alright. I understand. It's a sensitive subject for Laurance too. Dante as well." Aphmau adds, rubbing her shoulder sympathetically.

Makoto nods, her eyes falling to the ground.

Oh god, I want to hug her right now. Hold her in my arms.

"Anyway, I'm off to visit the others. I'll speak to you both later." Aphmau says with a smile.

"I'll speak to you later, Lady Aphmau." I say in reply.

She nods and walks off.

"Makoto.." I whisper.

Her eyes rise to meet mine. "Yeah..?"

"Can I speak to you in private?" I ask nervously.

She nods and begins to walk with me.

I ask her about what happened with Laurance.
She sighs heavily and begins to describe in detail about the situation.
Once she finishes, tears are flowing from her eyes. She doesn't know happiness...
My arms wrap around her and she buries herself in my embrace.

"Makoto, I'm so sorry you have to go through all this... But.. Does that mean last night meant nothing?" I ask hurting inside for her and myself.

She shook her head. Her angelic voice began to speak, "Last night when I giggled.. That's the first time I've felt a slither of happiness since I gave it up. In reality, I shouldn't have felt it but something about you made the sacrifice briefly non-existent."

I need to kiss her. She's so beautiful and knowing I'm the one who made her feel happiness for the first time in months made me fall even further for her.
I know it's too soon though.

"I have to apologise to Laurance.." She whispers.

I nod and reluctantly let go.

She wipes her tears and walks off to Ungrth's grave. We both knew he'd be there.
I sigh as she walks away and figure it's time I went back to patrolling.
