2nd period English had to be my favorite class. By the time I got to second period, I was usually wide awake. I loved English class; reading, writing, all of it. So when I sat down and started rifling through my folder and I came upon the note from 1st period, I gave it some more thought. "When you get to English look to Heaven/ That’s where I am when I’m with you/ There you will find clue number two." Heaven? My first thought was to look up. When I did, I saw an envelope taped to the ceiling directly above my desk with a blue number two inked onto it. Checking to make sure Mr. Brown was not in the room, I climbed on top of my desk and pulled down the envelope. Tearing it open I found a series of photographs. They had small blue numbers at the bottom, listing the order they should be viewed in. The first was a beautiful close-up of a pair of familiar green eyes. The evening light was caught in just the right way so that flecks of gold and red were visible in the irises. These are my eyes, but who would have taken this picture? I don’t remember having my picture taken, I thought to myself as I flipped to the next photograph. The second was a hand holding a CD case. The case artwork caught my eye. As I looked closer, I recognized it as The Used’s "In Love and Death" album. The cover depicted a heart hung on a noose by the branch of a dead tree. It was my favorite album cover. The hand holding the case was vaguely familiar, but I couldn’t place it. Moving on to the third page, I came upon a photo of a drawing. The girl in the sketch was absently twirling a lock of her hair while she read under the shade of an old oak tree. I felt my hand, of it’s own accord, start to twirl a strand of my hair. It was one of my nervous habits. I did it without thinking. Wait eyes, heart and me? "I love Lesly"? This guy loves me? In a daze, I turned to the final photograph. It was of a locker. Closer inspection showed it to be my locker. On the back I found a quick verse.
"My dearest Lesly:
This is the place where we first met,
It was a day I will never forget,
I hope you never forget me,
Inside you will find clue number three."
"What’s that?" Conner asked, making me jump. He slid into the desk next to mine, his usual seat, as he tried to discern what I held.
"This is the second mystery note I have found today. I’m not sure what they mean or who they are from. Do you know anything about this?" I questioned him, watching his reaction closely. Conner was my best friend and everyone knew it. He was very protective of me, so any guy would have to go through Conner to get to me. Unless, of course, this person decided to go around my self-appointed guardian.
"No, should I?" he asked, looking over the messy handwriting suspiciously.
"I don’t know."
Just as I tucked the stack of photos back into the envelope, Mr. Brown walked into the room and started class. That was the first day I didn’t pay attention in English, which was especially bad because we had just started working on plays. Plays were my absolute favorite part of English. As much as I wanted to pay attention, I couldn’t focus on what was happening in class. My mind was occupied with other thoughts. Who could these be from?
