The rest of math passed in a blur of numbers and anticipation. I could barely sit through my 5th period Chemistry class. Finally, the bell rang, releasing us to 6th period. Time for number six! I was genuinely excited, until I saw who was sitting in the desk next to mine.
“Hey there Les. Are you ready to partner up?” Robert asked with his signature cocky smirk in place.
“Totally. I saw Stacie during lunch so move out of her chair before she gets here, so she can sit with me. You know, because she’s my partner,” I replied as I pulled out my chair to sit down.
“Stacie switched out of this class ‘cause she got a job. You’re looking at your new partner. You’re lucky, I already like you so this should be fun,” he said leering at me.
“Lucky me,” I mumbled sarcastically as I dug out my notebook and a pencil to start copying down the night’s homework assignment.
“Hello class, today we are going to watch a movie on how Congress passes a bill. I suggest you take notes because you and your partner will be writing a report on the movie, due next week,” the collective groan that arose from the class only caused Mrs. Davis to chuckle. “I know it sounds boring, but at least I’m not having you each write me an essay and do mindless worksheets all period instead.” With that she turned off the lights and walked over to her desk to sort papers.
“Why don’t you move closer, partner? Then we can get nice and cosy,” Robert whispered as he ran his fingertips down my arm. Flinching at the tingles the contact left, I turned toward him with a fake flirtatious look.
“If you touch me again, I’ll scream. It’s taking all my willpower not to vomit from you touching my arm,” I replied in a low, sarcastically seductive tone. He smirked, but moved out of my personal space. I began taking notes vigorously on the dull movie, not trusting Robert to take any helpful ones.
“While the movie is playing, I’m going to be passing back last week’s test. If you did not pass, please see me and I will give you a test corrections form so you can raise your score,” Mrs. Davis called over the narrator’s monotone. I was doing my best to pay attention, but his voice was lulling me to sleep. I jolted awake when Mrs. Davis touched my shoulder.
“I know it’s dull but try to stay awake, and congratulations. You got the highest score on the test,” she whispered as she handed me the packet. Flipping to the last page I saw that I got 99/100. The page looked wrong somehow. Almost as if ink bled through from another page. Turning the page over I saw the now-familiar writing of the boy leaving me clues. I glanced over at Mrs. Davis a few desks away. She saw me looking and winked. She’s in on this too. God this guy got everyone to help him. It was too dark to read what he had written, so I put the test in my folder to read when the movie was over. As I went back to my notes, I felt someone watching me. I looked over at Robert just in time to see him look away. Why was he staring at me like that? It may have only been for a second, but the look he had directed at me was unmistakable. Anticipation. Is Robert in on it too?
