The video on the side is the song from the story. Since someone was using it to ask their girl to prom, I felt it was appropriate to add. Enjoy :]
"Thank you all for being here today. I wanted all of her friends to be here for this. I wanted her to see how loved she is. Lesly Michelle Spencer, I have a question for you," the boy on the field said into the microphone in his hands. My stomach dropped, my heart stopped, my breathing stilled, and I felt the heat rise into my cheeks.
"No way," I muttered, blushing profusely. Simon and Robert both chuckled.
"Oh come on Les. You can't honestly tell me you had no idea he was behind this," Simon said, smiling at me.
"Well, I mean, I don't know. I hoped it was him but-"
"Ha! You did know. I bet you just didn't want to get your hopes up in case it wasn't him," Robert teased.
"Well you might as well get your hopes up Lesly. It really is him," Simon nodded toward the smiling boy on the field.
"Lesly, I have wanted to tell you how I've felt for the longest time, but I was afraid to ruin our friendship," Conner said into the microphone. Oh my god.
"When we met freshman year at your locker, I knew you were the girl for me. I was trying to open my locker and was having no luck. It wasn't until you came and showed me that mine was the next locker over, that I was able to open it. That made a lot of sense since the locker I was trying to open turned out to be yours. You joked about how we had just met and I was already trying to break into your locker. You then spun your combination and pulled out a notebook. You wrote your combination on a strip of paper and handed it to me. 'For the next time you want to break in,' you told me. From that moment on, I knew we would be best friends," he said. I smiled at the memory. I can't believe he remembers that. I felt so stupid after I walked away. I was afraid I had been too forward by giving him my combination. I was so happy when I came back later to find a note from him in my locker. I still have it in my room. "It's not really breaking in if you let me, is it? -Conner" His combination was on the back of the note.
"That was how I got the daisy into your locker. I hope you weren't too worried by that. Now, all of you here mean something to my good friend Lesly. Some of you are her good friends; Stacie, Mrs. Hemingway, and hopefully now Robert and Simon. Some of you are her teachers; Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Sanchez, Mr. Brown. Some of you she really looks up to, that means you Mr. Drew. Oh that reminds me, if you want to see how talented Lesly is, check out the Spring Play. She wrote it. Anyway, the rest of you she loves and cares about deeply. Now look around," he paused to give the crowd the chance to do so, "Do you see how many of you there are? Lesly has so much love in her heart, see how many people she holds dear? How could I not love her? I don't think I've ever met someone with such a big heart or that genuinely cares so much for those around her. Les, I can't get you out of my head. Every time I start sketching, I draw you. Every time I listen to music, our song comes on. Whenever I'm in my room, all the pictures of us together surround me. I love you." At this point my face was beet red. Everyone was looking at Conner, hanging on his every word. He, on the other hand, was staring straight at me with those gorgeous blue eyes of his.
"Lesly, I love everything about you. Your caring nature, how you are a total klutz, your addiction to chocolate, your beautiful eyes, how you always try to make those around you smile, the way you refuse to take anyone's shit, the fact that you can take care of yourself, your silly personality, your extraordinary beauty, and most of all; your self assurance. You never let anyone else change you. I can trust you to always be you. Do you know how rare that is to find in people? You're special L. I only wish you could see yourself the way I do. You'd be able to see how talented, beautiful, sweet, and just generally amazing you are. You are my best friend and I love you with all my heart. So I just have one question for you..." he trailed off. Handing the microphone to Stacie who had been standing at the bottom of the bleachers, Conner turned to walk up the steps. Stacie set the microphone next to a stereo at the bottom of the bleachers where it began to pick up music.
"Prom with Jessie! Prom is coming up, it's on the 17th of May. And I've got a message, that I want to convey," Forrest Kline sang.
"Oh my god, he didn't," I laughed.
"I'll buy a nice suit and you can wear a pretty dress. You will watch me dance and realize I am the best!" At this point, Conner had reached the top of the bleachers. He knelt in front of me and took my hand.
"Will you go to the prom with me? And dance, and dance. And dance, and dance. And dance, and dance," Conner sang. Stacie paused the music. Everyone was looking at us, waiting for my answer.
"Hm, let me think about this," I said, tapping my finger against my lips thoughtfully. This caused an uproar from the people around us.
"Lesly, now you're just being mean. Put the poor boy out of his misery and give him an answer," Robert said, gently pushing my shoulder.
"Please L? I love you. I wouldn't want to go with anyone else. So, will you go to prom with me?" Conner asked, gazing lovingly into my eyes.
"Well when you put it that way..." I paused to torture him a bit more. "Of course I'll go to prom with you C. We will dance and dance, and dance and dance, and dance and dance!" I replied, pulling him into a kiss. The crowd cheered and Stacie turned the music back on. Conner grabbed my hand and pulled me down onto the field.
"May I have this dance?" he asked, bowing low.
"Well, I only dance to this song with one person," I replied.
"Oh?" he looked up at me questioningly.
"Yeah. I only dance to this song with my best friend. It is our song after all," I smiled.
"Well, I only dance to this song with my girlfriend," he replied with a mischievous smile.
"Wow. Asking me to prom and to be your girlfriend at the same time?"
"Yes ma'am."
"Well you did give me chocolates," I mused teasingly. "Alright, I'll be your girlfriend."
"Thanks, L"
"You're lucky I love you."
"I know," he pulled me into a kiss before we began dancing. This is the happiest moment of my life. Not only did the most amazing guy in the world ask me to prom and to be his girlfriend, I also get to share this whole experience with my best friend. I love him.
