As soon as Sam was old enough to understand all of the responsibilities of being a prince, he'd had a difficult life.  He was a bright young man, receiving the best education possible, and he had brilliant ideas, but no one listened to him.  Many people said that he was too young and did not have enough experience to come up with any great solutions.  Sam then began to rebel against everyone, for it was the only way, he felt, that he could receive any attention.  His father noticed the  change in his behavior right away.  At first, Sam's father was angry and annoyed by his rebellion, but after some time, his father began to see his rebellious behavior as a trait of a good leader. Just when Sam thought he would finally receive approval and love from his father, he was sent into battle.

Once he was at camp, he became even more aggressive and rebellious.  He proved to his officers that he was a good fighter, but because he was always hard and cold, no one wanted to be around him. Since he had no friends, he spent most of his time alone, coming up with more and more ideas, though part of him felt like it was useless to keep on trying.  Though he was only nineteen-years-old and the youngest officer, everyone did what he told them to do in fear of him; he was very harsh whenever he gave an order.

He had been in the middle of the battlefield when the enemy surrendered.  They had killed almost all of the other soldiers; the ones who lived were the ones who either fled or were taken prisoner.

His commanding officer suddenly appeared next to him.

"Sam, go to their camp to see if there are any men left in the tents.  If there are, I want you to bring them back with you.  We need to head out."

Without a word, he nodded.  Though he did not have far to go, the land seemed to stretch out forever ahead of him with dead, bloody bodies, both ally and foe, lying everywhere, even stacked on top of each other.

At first, he did not have any luck, finding all the tents empty.  When he reached the last tent, he was shocked to find a man, all by himself, not saying a word.

"Sir, come quietly with me, or I will shoot you."

Surprisingly, the young man followed, never hesitating, showing no emotions.  Sam was taken back by this.  He feared this man.  Sam sensed that though this man said nothing, he felt that this man could be trusted.  As he led the soldier to his camp, Sam was amazed at this man.

Why didn't he say anything?  What haunted him so deeply?  Why did he cooperate so well, without putting up a fight?

Could this man, this stranger, be the first friend that Sam would make?
