~Otonashi's POV

It was the first day of school, and I was already late. My little sister Hatsune was hogging the bathroom this morning for over an hour, and I hadn't even had time for breakfast. I was late enough to have to run, and this is coming from the guy who turns up to school 10 minutes late every day. I guess it was because I was in such a rush I didn't see her. And then ran straight into her.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't see you, I was in a rush~" I stopped when I saw who she was. She had beautiful, long white hair and amber eyes that looked almost golden in the sun. She wasn't very tall, and seemed like the sort of person you'd miss in a crowd. I feel like I know her, but I couldn't think where from. I focused in time to hear her say "S'okay, I'm not hurt. It doesn't matter." She started to walk away, but impulsively I grabbed her wrist. She turned suddenly, startled.
"S-sorry, but what's your name?" I stuttered. Not looking up at me, she replied "Kanade. Kanade Tachibana." As she said this, I felt a lurch in my chest, and the memory of a smiling girl with white hair flashed before my eyes. Shaking my head, I focused on Kanade. "Uhm, what's your name?" She asked shyly. "My name's Yuzuru Otonashi, but you can just call me Otonashi" I smiled. She gave me a wierd look, and her eyes widened. "SCHOOL!" She yelped, "I'm going to be so late!" Oops. I forgot about that. We both started running, and it wasn't until we were both outside my school that I realised we must go to the same school. She could even be in my year. Not that it mattered right now, we were both so dead. "I'm so sorry for making you late" I gasped between breaths as we sprinted down the hallways. "It's okay, I was already going to be late" she panted. Finally I reached my classroom, with Kanade hot on my heels. As we burst into the classroom, I realised just how late we were. Everyone was already seated, and starting the first lesson. Everyone turned to look at us, startled by our abrupt entrance. Miss Hideyoshi {my home room teacher} barely even glanced in our direction, but simply sighed and said "Otonashi, you'll be in the back row next to Hinata, and  Tachibana you'll be next to Iwasawa. Guess we weren't too dead then. I smiled to myself; I'd really lucked out with seating arrangements this year. Me and Hinata have been friends since kindergarten, and he's the most popular guy in the year. As I went to sit down, Kanade went to sit in front of me. I had REALLY lucked out. Hinata nudged me and gave me a look that clearly said: "You have to tell me the whole story later." I sighed. It was going to be a long day.

~Kanade's POV~

I don't know why, but I get the feeling I know Otonashi. I mean, aside from meeting him just now that is. Especially when he told me his name. My chest went all tight, as if someone were squeezing it. he just looks so familiar, and-

He ran on ahead of me, the wind blowing through his dark orange hair. As he turned, I caught a glimpse of his smiling face, as he pulled me after him. As I followed, my hat was pulled from my head and it fell to the ground as-

My head's spinning, and the classroom has gone all fuzzy. Miss Hideyoshi's voice sounds slurred, as the world tilts and I fall sideways towards the ground.

~Otonashi's POV~

As Miss Hideyoshi droned on about algebra, I doodled in my notebook. I was halfway through drawing the sleeping kid opposite me, when I heard a gasp, and looked up in time to see Kanade slipping sideways. Without thinking I lunged forwards and caught her before she fell to the ground. Once again, everyone turned to look at me and Kanade. All at once everyone crowded around us, asking what happened. Over the noise from all my classmates, I heard Miss Hideyoshi telling me to take her to the sickbay. In a way I was relieved, although concerned about Kanade. Was it my fault? I'd already knocked her over once today, maybe she'd really hurt herself? As I was leaving, Hideyoshi gave me yet another look, although I'm not sure what for. Kanade is actually surprisingly light, so it wasn't that hard to get her to the sickbay. Our school nurse sighed when she saw me. "Already visiting, Otonashi?" {I had pretty much spent last year in the sickbay.} "It's actually not for me this time, nurse Chelia. My friend Kanade collapsed just now." Clucking like a mother hen, nurse Chelia placed her into a bed. "You should be off now, Otonashi. And try to stay out of trouble this year." Nodding, I left.

~Kanade's POV~

I have to find something. Anything. But where did Mum and Dad hide the valuables? If only I had just payed attention, then she wouldn't be dead. I have to save them! But I'm running out of time. I grab the nearest thing, not knowing its value at all. But it's not enough. And as I turn, I see them lying there, the pool of crimson expanding over the cream-coloured carpet.

I open my eyes, the white ceiling staring back at me. I Sighed, and sat up. No matter how many times I have that dream, it's always painful. Whenever I used to tell my parents, they'd just laughed. "Don't be silly Kanade", they'd say. "You don't have any brothers or sisters.go back to sleep, it was just a dream." But it feels so real to me. As if I really did have siblings.
"Ahem." I jump, as I look to see nurse Chelia, with her hands on her hips, looking down at me. "How're you feeling?" She asked. "I feel fine now, thanks" I replied. After being told to take it easy, I started to head back to class. As I left, I vaguely remember Otonashi carrying me. I must remember to thank him, I thought to myself. He's the first person that's ever really talked to me, even after being here for several years.
By the time I got back to class, it was pretty much time for lunch. As everyone headed off together in twos or threes, I went out by myself to the cafeteria.
But before I could leave, I felt a hand on my wrist. As I turned, for the second time today I saw Otonashi.
"Uhm, thanks." I said to the floor. "I mean for earlier. When you took me to the sickbay." I looked up to see that Otonashi is also looking at the floor. I'm glad it's not just me that's awkward.
"No problem. Hey, do you wanna come to lunch with us?" Us? Oh. Walking over to join us was Hinata. I was just about to say no, when I realised this was my first time being invited to got to lunch with someone. I smiled to myself. "I'd love to."

~Meanwhile~

The pink haired girl watched from her window. There was just something about that blue~haired boy that always made her smile.
If only I could just go talk to him, she thought to herself. If only I wasn't like this...
