From good to bad

"Okay hon' lift your arm for me" she says, and I do as told. She was a blond haired women called Renzik, she was checking my temperature and asking me if,"this hurts?" and "are you or have you been sick lately?"

After my number was called they were going to take me toward the building but I told them I had to wait for my brother. They insisted that I entered the building without him, telling me that he was coming later on.

I wouldn't budge, because I made a promise not to ever leave him and I'm not planing on breaking that promise.

They finally gave up and let me wait for him. " It would have been a much faster check up if you left first but now your going to have to wait longer." they complained, trying to make me feel guilt but I didn't really care, I just couldn't and wouldn't dare leave him.

So now we're here, me waiting for Renzik to finish my check up. Sam went first so now he's siting on the stool, waiting for this to be over. He was glued to me since we got inside but he was forced to let go for his check up.

"So, how did you two kids get here?" Renzik asks as she writes in a notepad."We were at a camp and then soon enough, soldiers came and put us in a bus" I say without emotion.

"How long have you been there?"she asks another question. "2 months" I say, my voice cracking in the end. I cough to try to clear my throat but that only makes it worse. Renzik looks up from her clipboard, eyeing my face for any sign of sickness. She walks toward me and tells me to open my mouth. I do and she puts a Popsicle stick in my mouth. She flicks a pen/flash light on and points it at my mouth.

" hmm... you might, be sick" she says still looking in my mouth. "Has anyone in your family been sick?"she asks finally finishing and clicking the light off and throwing the Popsicle stick away.

"My mother had died of the plague almost 3 months ago"

"Anyone else?"

I shake my head "No, just her."
She writes it down on the notepad and then  looks back at me. She gets up and walks toward me again "Ok this is what I'm going to do" she says grabbing cotton from a box. She starts rubbing it on my upper left arm. " I'm going to give you a shot and scan your blood to check for anything... out of place."she finishes and takes a needle from the same box and puts a bottle in it.

"Ok" I say quietly nodding my head.

She move the needle toward my arm and fixes its position and drives it threw my arm leaving a tingling pain. I can see Sam give me a sad expression from where he sits but I try to smile at him.

She stays like that for a few seconds and then finally pulls it out. She holds up the needle up to the light showing a full bottle of blood. It was something I saw a lot since the waves started. The bodies stalked up on one another in the highways, in houses, and fields. You cant really avoid whats everywhere.

She put it in a plastic bag and then wipes the blood away from my arm and places a band aid on it. "Ok just give me a few hours and you'll have your records by then." She says putting the needle away.

"Ok we just need to finish a few things first and then you will be escorted" she says picking up the notepad and clicks the pen
" but first I need to ask you a few questions." She says glancing between me and Sam. She begins without waiting for my response:

" are there any known family members still alive?"

" have you seen anyone since the last wave, if so where and when?"

"What are your full names?"

"Were have you been since the first wave started?"

When she finally finished she put away the notepad and pulls out see-threw gloves from a rectangle box. "Now I'm going to give you something that might give you slight pain but it will be over before you know it" she said putting the gloves on. She pulls out something that looks like the futuristic guns we believed in.

"So who's first?" She asks pointing between me and Sam. From my side view I see Sam shrink in his seat.

"I will" I say standing from my seat and she walks toward me still holding the gun-looking thing.

"Breath in" she says pointing it at my neck. I feel a pinch of pain in my neck once I do, but I try not to show it in front of Sam so instead I try to smile at him." Breath out" she says and I do.

I walk back toward Sam" your turn" I hear Renzik say behind me to Sam. I grab Sam's hand and kneel down beside him." It's alright Sam, I'll  be right next to you" I say pulling him up. He slowly starts to walk toward her and he holds my hand tighter.

"Breath in" She tells him and he does as told. His grip tightens around my hand as she shots it.

"Now we can track you down at all time if you ever get lost." She says as she puts away the gun-looking thing." You kids are our number one priority now" she says as she walks back toward us.

"Why?" Sam asks still holding my hand.
"Well when this is over, it's up to you to fix the world." She says in a kinda, sweet tone. "Those fucking aliens will get what they deserve and we'll take back what's our" her voice is filled with anger but it doesn't match her unemotional face but soon it turns into a grin.

" speaking of them, would you like to see one?"

See one?  I furrow my eyebrows in confusion
"come with me" she says walking to the end of the room were there is a huge mirror. We walk toward her and she picks up a square shaped remote connected to a cable. There was two rectangle gray shaped objects connected to the wall. There were two eye holes in each one to peer inside.

"Look" she said as she pressed a button from the control. When she did the mirror became see-threw. Inside was a boy maybe a little older than me strapped in a chair connected by wires in his whole body."look" she said mentioning to the rectangular object. We take it and look threw it. Green, its head was glowing green.

"That's it's true form" she says as I still watch the green glow grow wide from the boys head.

"The body is just a disguise. " she continues and I can hear her boots slowly pacing around the room. " And you must dispose of it."

"What?!" I half yell at her at what she just asked me to do. Is she for real?!

" yes, you have to kill it, NOW" she says putting the button in between me an Sam.

"No" I say in disbelief at here suggestion.

"Fine" she says turning to face Sam instead
"How about you hon'?" He looked at it long and hard before I decided to end this, end it.

I press the button and it's like all pain and remorse flushed out of me in a push of a button.

The green glow dies down and the boys eyes close shut. My gaze never leaves it's dead figure.

"Good girl" she she whispers beside me and then walks back. I turn my head slowly away from the dead boy in front of me. No, not boy, an alien that would have killed someone if I didn't, I did the right thing. It felt good to do the right thing, to kill something that would have killed others like me.

And that's the story of how I went from good Cassie that wouldn't kill a fly to bad Cassie who'd kill more than a fly to stay alive.
